However, discussion is informal and debate is formal. Discussion takes place when opinions, views, and ideas can be spoken of freely. Debate occurs with great effort and preparation to counter other’s arguments and to persuade an audience of one’s own points and views through reasonable argument. There are many benefits that one can gain from debates, especially critical thinking, listening, and organizational skills. Not only can the debaters benefit from group debates but the quality of information that is sent back and forth throughout these arguments can benefit the matters at hand.
