According to Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Hong Kong government, Nutrition labelling plays an important role in choosing healthy food choice for food purchasers and facilitate the food industry to produce health food product and avoiding deceptive claim and misleading information of the product. It is essential to implement the nutrition labelling to improve public health as diet-related diseases are quite serious problem worldwide.

Energy and 7 core nutrient (1+7) is adopted as nutrition labelling format in Hong Kong. 7 nutrients are protein, total fat, saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugars and sodium. All these information must be included in most prepackage food product.

Nutrition labelling can improve the eating habit and it is getting more common around the world. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) decided to study the feasibility of nutrition labelling scheme in Hong Kong. It is revealed that mandatory nutrition labelling scheme is one of the workable ways to facilitate the food safety and healthy eating to enhance the public health.

On the basis of the result, the Hong Kong government proposed labelling system and announced public consultation in 2003 to gather views on the implementation of nutrition labelling. According to the implementation experience from foreign country and the collection of opinion in the public consultation, 8 possible labelling format and exemptions is proposed. Finally, energy and 7 core nutrient (1+7) is adopted as basic nutrition labelling format in Hong Kong after approach.
