The problem of obesity is enormous especially in America. I see overweight people everywhere I go. Some of my family members are obese and it has caused them some health problems. In a recent survey done at a community college in Southeastern Michigan, students were asked their opinions on the soda tax. 15 percent said they drink soda once a day, 21 percent said more than once a day, 30 percent said a few times a week, and 18 percent said a few times a year. Some people believe soda is responsible for the obesity problem in America. Some are suggesting a soda tax to discourage sales. The soda tax will not discourage people from buying it. The plan for the soda tax is to help stop the problem of obesity. Having the tax will supposedly discourage people from buying it often. Every bottle will be charged 10 cents. This way customers will think about every bottle that they buy. The tax revenue is supposed to be put into different programs. The tax revenue will benefit society. The government can use it for many purposes. One …show more content…
17 percent of the students thought that the soda tax would be pointless. It will not discourage people from buying soda. People will not stop buying soda because there will not be a huge change in price. A few pennies will not discourage people from buying soda. Another point is that soda is not the only reason causing obesity. Food is a bigger problem than soda. Third, the soda tax shouldn’t be a burden on every citizen because some members of the society are obese. According to the article titled “American Beverage Association Statement on Soda Taxes," most people don’t see the soda tax as a solution. More choices are given to those people such as reducing calories on beverages. Schools now are removing unhealthy drinks. Companies will lower the calories of beverages. In the next 10 years calories will be reduced by 20 percent. These measures will have a greater impact than
Canada and the United States has a major obesity problem. Since the 1980’s the percentage of adults with obesity and diabetes has dramatically increased to a point where over 1 in 3 adults and 1 in 3 children age 2 to 19 in the United States are considered to have obesity (“Overweight & Obesity Statistics”). When children enter adulthood already overweight or obese it is much harder for them to live a healthy lifestyle. One of the major contributors to obesity is sugary drinks such as Monster energy drinks and Coca-Cola. These sugary drinks can have as much as forty grams of sugar per serving, and many people consume multiple servings per day.
Being health is very important and there are a lot of unhealthy foods and drinks that can get in the way of staying healthy. The number of obese people is increasing in the U.S. and soda is one of the many reasons for this. But a soda ban is on the best approach for this problem because of it not being the largest cause for obesity. It is not a good idea to try to regulate the amount of soda a person can purchase because it has little to no health advantages, there are too many ways people can get around it, and it has the potential to open the gates to other bans. Although it could help people since it has not been previously proven helpful for people’s health.
In addition to restaurants having low prices, consumers may look to get their high doses of glucose and fat from shelves in convenient stores. For example, a bag of chips cost $1, but yet a healthier snack such as a cup of yogurt ranges from $1.19-$1.99. The price difference is not much but after an extended period of time consumers will have to start considering their budget. Processed foods may be inexpensive but in the long run detrimental to consumers’
The soda ban is a defective idea in itself because of the loopholes in the plan. As Karin Klien talks about the problem in her article “Sodas a Problem but…”, “Convenience stores such as 7-Eleven are overseen by State and would be exempt , but a Burger King across the street would be restricted” (Klien, 288). In addition, there isn’t a need for this soda ban because it makes no sense for a customer at a fast food restaurant (like Subway) to walk across the street and go to a 7-eleven, which is a state-ran store that has drinks that are over 16oz., and even over 64oz. People could even go to a grocery store and buy a 2-liter bottle of the sugary drink because it isn’t run by the city. Another way the soda ban contradicts itself is because of how you’d get the same amount of sugar if you were to drink a drink from a smoothie
The obesity rate in America today is unreasonably high and something needs to be done about it. In the article Taxing Junk food to counter obesity published by the Us National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health in 2013 and states “Several studies suggest that high taxes may lead to measurable decreases in obesity on a population level, particularly if combined with additional interventions”. This law needs to be legalized for the safety and health of our nation for these reasons: Our obesity rate is at a all time high, This has been implemented in other countries around the world, and it more expensive to be obese. Our obesity rate in America is at a high rate and is only increasing, we as a nation need to make an effort to lower this percentage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “69.1% of American adults age 20 years and over are either overweight or obese.
Are you proud of putting 86 grams of sugar into your body when having a large (32 o.z.) soda at McDonald’s? Or 102 grams of sugar when you drink a large (40 o.z.) soda from Burger King? In America, 86 grams of sugar with one meal is typical, and it is a problem. On average, Americans drink 44.7 gallons of soda per year, per person, yet only drink 28.3 gallons of bottled water per year. This much soda is extremely unhealthy, and that is why a soda ban was enforced in New York City, limiting soda to be sold in no more than 16 ounce cups at a time.
That amounts to 16.5 percent of the country’s medical care expenses” (Casebook 630). In hope to reduce the rate of obesity in the American population, a proposal to increase the taxes of obese people has been made. Considering that not everyone is overweight or obese because of binging, gorging and physical inactivity, it is a controversial topic.
Abstract: Obesity is a widespread epidemic in the U.S. that needs to be taken more seriously. This is incredibly important because thousands of people die from this enormous issue. Americans do not take the issue seriously; it obvious by the millions of obese people in the United States. There are many contrasting opinions on this topic, such as the social rights and abilities of obese people; therefore, it causes controversies. The experts that have written books and articles on this concern have the solutions to the problem; however, it is up to the American people to make a change in their everyday life to rid the country of this horrible disease.
All these companies combine together and have stood against the government attempts to reduce the consumption of soda by saying that the people can take their own decisions if they want to drink or not. Targeting the single soda company is wrong by the New York Mayor Michal Bloomberg which can
The movement against obesity has of the recent past proved as a major distress to the American government. Currently, two-thirds of the American citizenry struggle because of their heaviness issues or rather has obesity. As such, obesity is the main reason as to why the existing generation of youths predicted to have short life period in comparison to their parents. As such, the broad effects of the nation’s obesity scourge are becoming immense leading to businesses, populations and taxpayers hundreds of billions each year on obesity issues. On the other hand, the American administration has place significant control policies to curb the menace of tobacco aimed at changing the general public image of smoking.
¨Several critics questioned why the city was making proposal on sugary drinks a priority when some city schoolchildren have no physical education classes.¨ (Washington TImes) In New York, Mayor Bloomberg placed a law on the sizes of soda citizens are allowed to get. However, this caused a lot of controversy on whether the ban was good or bad. Despite the amount of people supporting the ban´s choice, the ban does have some downsides on it. It is not a good idea to limit the amount of a soda a person can purchase (or propose the ban) because it's not applying to all, it's taking rights away from people, and itś not a big deal.
Each year, billions of gallons of soda are sold in the United States alone.” Soda must be allowed to middle schoolers during school hours. Soda should be allowed because kids need more of a choice at school and soda is not the cause of all the bad stuff. Soda must be allowed at middle school because kids need more of a choice at school. At many schools the only things to drink are milk, water, and a few other juices you have to pay extra for.
Did you know that 60% of adults and one in four children in Australia are overweight or obese, making us one of the most overweight developed nations? Almost half of our population comsumes a sugary drink each day. I believe that it is about time we do something about this. With sugary drinks and weight related health problems closely linked, leading experts from the cancer Council, diabities Australia and the Heart foundation say the sugar tax would be a great solution.
Poor diets are causing around 70,000 premature deaths each year(1). That is why doctors from the BMA suggest that sugary drinks should be taxed by 20%, in order to attempt to cut consumption and tackle the obesity crisis. Sugary drinks are considered demerit goods as they can have a negative impact on the consumer; in other words, they have negative externalities of consumption. However, these harmful effects can be unknown or ignored by the consumer.
So if you went to the store and bought a soda for a dollar you would pay a total of $1.07. But if the sales tax percent went down to 5, then you would only have to pay $1.05. This may not seem like a big deal to you all because after all there was on a two cent difference, but on larger scale that 7% tax paid makes a huge difference.
