The existence of open green space is very important for a city. It provides ecosystem services to the city such as ecological function as ‘urban lungs’ for natural air filters in reducing pollution, social function as a space for public activities and also economical function as a stimulant for urban tourism development. OGS are necessary to provide cultural services in urban context, such as recreational spots for urban dwellers to relax and enjoy the city life, education space, inspiration resource and also enrichment culture. With the good park design, it actually adds value to the property close by and increases the standard living for all urban dwellers. The current condition of Bandung parks condition is not sufficient both from its quantity and quality. It has to be transformed and developed to create a convenience social urban space.
The city of Bandung has 518 parks with an area of 994,540.27 m2 and other Green Open Spaces which total 6.9% of the total area of the city of Bandung. This number is far below what is required by the City of Bandung Regulation No. 3 Year 2006 regarding the changes in the City of Bandung Regulation No. 2 Year 2004 on the City of Bandung Regional Spatial Plan which requires 10% of the total area of the city of Bandung, i.e. 16,726 Ha, should be allocated for green open spaces. Thematic park is one of government strategies to revitalize and make city parks more interesting. By utilizing slums and abandoned areas in the city, such as space under flyover and abandoned park, now there are already 7 out of 30 (target) thematic park have been built. Refer to Ridwan Kami, as city mayor, the purposes of this thematic park construction are to create happy city where city residents can socialize in public space beside shopping mall and achieve minimum green space
