2.2 IMPLEMENTATION OF ACTIVITIES RELATED TO CONCEPT
Palpation is the last part of abdominal assessment during which you use your finger tips to feel all over your abdomen for rigidity, tenderness or masses. Light palpation is done to know how soft or hard the abdomen is. To perform light palpation, use one hand to depress the abdomen slightly. Deep palpation is done to feel the masses and identify any tenderness.
PROCEDURE FOR ABDOMINAL PALPATION
To perform deep palpation use one or both hand and the finger tips to depress the abdomen more deeply. Before palpating try and make your patients relax. In deep bimanual palpation, the nurse extends the dominant hand as for light palpation, then places the finger pads of the non-dominant hand on the dorsal surfaces of the distal interphalangeal joint of the middle three fingers of the dominant hand. Pressure is applied by the top hand while the lower hand remains relaxed to perceive the tactile sensations. For deep palpation using one hand, the finger pads of the dominant hand press over the area to be palpated. Often the other hand is used to support a mass or organ from below. Deep palpation is a technique used more commonly by nurse practitioners and clinical specialists than by nurses in general practice.
2.5 USEFULNESS OF CONCEPT TO THE WORLD
Palpation is a psychomotor skill and a component of the examination process.
It helps clinicians in assessment of the joint, neurology, range of motion, muscle strength thus assisting in clinical decision process.
Palpation is used by physicians and other medical personnel to perform assessment which helps in making clinical decision.
