Peace and social justice have had a long-standing connection when one falls the other fails. Dictionary.com describes social justice as, "the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society" (2018). From the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the Catholic Church 's Social Teaching 's, the world is continually working to continually connect peace and social justice together in an effort to better the world for everyone. In the multitude of examples of egregious violence and social disparity witnessed in the last century, the lack of peace due to wars or other conflicting moments in history has led to an increase in human rights violations and a general lack of social justice. European countries in abandoning their African posts opened the countries of Africa up to tremendous social injustices resulting in the increase of poverty, social inequity, and the political disenfranchisement of many. Post WWII Africa was a hot bed of political upheaval, with a past of heavy imperialism, countries such as Ghana were liberated and essentially left to their own devices. These countries had no knowledge or time to learn how to care for their population and the governments that were put in place quickly fell, only to be replaced by other failed governments and the cycle left many feeling fear and anger. In Ghana specifically, the country faced much strife in electing a leader to aid their newly independent country. Nkrumah was a political firebrand who was elected as the governor of the Gold Coast which eventually led to the independence of the Gold Coast, now Ghana, from Britain (Harding People 's Century). Nkrumah was originally a powerful and strong force of the independence movement, but quickly became a ruthless dictator that committed many human rights violations against his own people.
