This summer I read “Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief” translated into German and written by Rick Riordan. The story is about Perseus “Percy” Jackson, a 12 year old who has dyslexia and ADHD. Percy lives in New York and often finds himself kicked out of school because of mysterious reasons. During a school field trip, Percy’s best friend Grover gets bullied by a girl named Nancy Bobofit. In the attempts to protect his friend, Percy tries to help but a fountain next to Nancy grabs her. Nancy blames this on Percy and tells the Pre-Algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds. When Mrs. Dodds seperates Percy from the group to talk to him, she turns into a Furie and attacks him. Luckily, Percy’s Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner, throws Percy a pen that transforms into a sword when uncapped. With the new weapon, Percy kills Mrs. Dodds and goes back to the class. Ever since this incident, Grover and Mr. Brunner have been talking about him, and a mysterious stolen object. On the last day of school, Percy’s mother, Sally, brings him to the beach house where she and Percy’s father first met. However, a storm interrupts their vacation and Grover tells them to leave. While driving, they are all attacked by a …show more content…

Some devices used by the author in this story are alliterations, similes, and personifications. Some similarities in these two books are that both main characters need to solve a problem, both need help from

”(142). This quote was from Lightning Thief. “Usually there is a discovery, some event, or some danger that starts them on a heroic path” This quote comes from Hero’s Journey, stage: “Call for Adventure”. I think these two quotes align together because Percy needs to retrieve what was stolen.
Percy is a little ashamed that he has gone from the only son of Poseidon and a hero of camp half-blood to the brother of a monster, but in spite that he does care for Tyson. Tyson has to deal with a lot of disdain and inequality such as bullying him ignored him , from the students at the school he attends with Percy, from the other monsters, from the half-bloods at camp. But he is unlike any other monster, he has a really pure heart. He didn’t feel ashemed of his brother eventhough his face is cylopes. He loves Percy, loves his father and believes when he prayed to Poseidon for a friend he was led to Percy.

Percy has learned his role throughout the story as he journeys to bring back what was taken from his uncle (Zeus) to keep peace in the world. Throughout “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan, the main character Percy Jackson grows in many ways. Through application of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Cycle, Percy’s development as a leader over the course of “The Lightning Thief” can be analyzed (Campbell). Percy is born into the hero’s cycle at his natural birth and his call to adventure is the attack by Mrs. Dodds. Percy crosses the threshold, when he leaves Montauk with his mother and Grover and the first trial testing his leadership is on the bus with the furies. Trials exemplifying Percy’s growth include: the furies, Medusa, the Saint Louis Arch, the “Waterland” Waterpark, the Lotus Hotel, Crusty’s Waterbed Palace, and Hades and the Underworld.
Zeus and Odin have many similarities, however their differences set them apart from each other. For every difference between Greek and Norse mythology, there is as many similarities. Zeus and Odin are, or if not the most powerful gods. Each had a different way of gaining their power and becoming leaders. Both share similar traits and power among other gods in their realms.
