Before you run to your local fish store to buy your first pet piranha, there are a few things you want to keep in mind.
Basics
1. Piranhas are amazon river fish - Making them feel at home in your basement and keeping them for a long time will require a fair amount of effort on your part. The right lighting, the right water chemistry and the proper maintenance will go a long way.
2. They don't eat table scraps - Don't think that you can just scrape off the leftovers from your plate every meal hoping that's enough to keep them going. They are meat lovers and require a steady high-quality diet (brine shrimp, daphnia, beef heart, shrimp, etc.) And no, a meat lover's pizza does not count! Owners have been known to get rid of their piranhas based on the grocery bill alone.
3. The bigger the better - The fish tank that is. Lots of people try to cram piranhas in smaller tanks and wonder why they don't survive. Of course sometimes it can work but you have higher chances of success when you go bigger. Now, having said all that, there are a lot of pros to having a pet piranha. Having the right set up can be an amazing experience.
Planning
The next step is to decide what you want and then get the appropriate supplies.
1. Determine the type of piranha you want to get.
I'll keep it simple. Piranhas are freshwater aquarium fish and there are

If you like the shy and bashful type of piranha, then stick with one because they tend to hide most of the day. (Hint: Not much fun for the fish or you!) The general rule of thumb when dealing with red belly piranhas is to keep 3 or more at a minimum. This is because they are shoaling fish, which means they like to hang out in gangs, and aren't really thrilled with being alone. Some people have tried to keep two together, however that's a little risky since one may try to dominate the other (I.e.: possibly slit the other's throat while it's sleeping at
This bait is one of my most common baits that I personally use. It is great almost anywhere and the only thing that the fisherman has to worry about is if they choose the right plastic worm or lizard. The Texas, Carolina, and the Florida rig both use the technique of
“A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel” (King James Version, Prov. 12.10). In order to fully regard the life of God’s beasts, we must preserve/facilitate their population so others can look and marvel at God’s creation. Information shows that seahorse populations are commonly vulnerable to heavy exploitation due to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), aquarium trade, and destruction of natural habitats (Allee). The IUCN red list of threatened species tracks animal populations and classifies them based on conservation status. Many species of seahorse such as the Hippocampus Reidi are classified as data deficient; showing there is a lack of research and concern over these disappearing
The northern snakehead preys on zooplankton, smaller fish, fish larvae, crustaceans, frogs, insects, small reptiles, and even small mammals and birds. In the areas in which the northern snakehead has invaded, native populations are having gradual decreases because of the northern snakehead’s unextinguishable appetite. The most notable features of the northern snakehead fish are its snake-like characteristics. The fish has a long cylindrical body with the blotchy coloration and patterns of a snake.
The Clown Loach fish (not to be confused with the Clown Fish in Finding Nemo) is one of the most popular aquarium fish around. The reason is probably their peaceful demeanor and entertaining personality. If you set up your aquarium incorrectly the clown loach will be shy and spend most of its time in hiding. However, if you set the aquarium up properly the clown's personality will begin to emerge. Clown loaches are community fish and thrive when they have at least 4 other clown loaches to hang out with.
Smaller crankbaits seem to work best but I have switched to a large crankbait with good results when the shad are running large. Color always comes up in conversations pertaining to crappie. Personally, I use shad color but I do know of some folks who have had great results with crawfish patterns and colors. Chartreuse is another die hard color for crappie and that holds true for crankbaits. When the shad are
River otters have beautiful coats and thus they have been hunted by many people. They mainly eat fish, but they eat many other easily accessible things, like shellfish, crustaceans, mollusks, oysters, birds, rodents, and frogs. Their population is hard to tally, but has been estimated to be over 100,000 based on harvest reports. River otters may be found in all states and territories of the U.S. and Canada. They will only settle into an area amidst concealing structures, generally consisting of foliage or rock piles.
AP Environmental Science: Chapter 5 1. Explain how southern sea otters act as a keystone species in kelp beds. The otters help to keep sea urchins and other kelp-eating species from depleting highly productive and rapidly growing kelp forests, which provide habitats for a number of species in offshore coastal waters. Without southern sea otters, sea urchins would probably destroy the kelp forests and much of the rich biodiversity associated with them.
The National Baltimore Aquarium is one of the largest non profit aquarium in the United States. The aquarium strives to help inspire people on how important it is to preserve the beauty of the ocean and also why some species are becoming endangered. The aquarium is an iconic landmark offering marine-life exhibits, a dolphin show, shark tank and walk-through rain forest. Every year the aquarium has a new exhibits and shows for the public. This aquarium is one of my favorite vacation spot because I really like how the aquarium is constructed and It's a family friendly, interactive educational experience.
“Rockfish come in more than 100 species and many different shapes, sizes and color patterns.” Typically, radiant! Few other organisms live here too.
Lolita, a killer whale that lives in Miami, lives in a tank that is “sixty by eight feet with a platform down the middle” (Holt Gutierrez). Killer whales can weigh up to six-tons (“What to do about a killer whale”) and can be 23 to 32 feet in length. This space is obviously too small for an animal of that size. “Captivity is, in essence, poor habitat for orcas, causing early death” (“Captivity Is Dangerous”). The small tanks cause “chronic stress” (“Captivity is Dangerous”) and can cause infection, which is “the most common cause of death for captive orcas” (“Captivity is Dangerous”).
The first reason why I think should not be in captivity is of what happens in their tank. The first piece of evidence from the PETA practical “Aquariums and Marine Parks” is that since the tanks for the orcas are usually small for them, they get insane because of the echolocation they use. This makes me think that since their fin sometimes curves, that they would get injured while swimming. In addition, this might make the whale die faster than what they are supposed to live to. Other people might say it might non’t affect it
Andre Cole Ricardo Acosta G. English 101 September 22, 2015 Do Killer Whales Actually Belong in Captivity? Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
Imagine the change they have to go through! That is heart breaking! In conclusion, those are multiple reasons why I believe that Marine Animals should not be held captive! First, captivity causes many health problems for the innocent marine mammals. Second, changing the underwater creature’s natural habitat is very unhealthy for them.
You take a huge breath in your scuba mask. You dive into the water you, open your eyes. It’s all bright and colorful. You see multiple animals. There is some that are ugly but you see the most beautiful fish.
Within the first group, Haplochrominae, there are two subgroups. Both subgroups require different environments which is something that you should consider when setting up the tank. The first one, known as Haps, consists of open water and sand dwelling species. The second subgroup is known as mbuna, which means “rockdwellers”. The Mbuna fish are smaller, and both sexes are often brightly colored, though in some species the females may be brownish overall.
