Poor Sleep
“Not enough sleep leads to weak”. This is the title of an article published by The daily mirror. According to the research of that, People who sleep less than 6 hours a day are 12% more likely to die. Although Sleep deprivation occurs very easily in human life, it causes terrible physical, mental, and cognitive problems because the relationship between sleep and human life are closely connected.
Many people feel sleepy during the daytime, and most of them actually have sleep deprivation. Such poor sleep is mostly the result of wrong lifestyle habits. People in the modern society have own jobs or tasks, and most of them are necessary to start working in the morning; consequently, they have to get up early. One of the consequences of less sleep is deteriorating human immune system. Studies show that people who do not get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus since the relationship between sleep and immune system are . Moreover, people can be fat easily under the lack of sleep. Several studies showed insufficient sleep and weight gain are linked. One research shows people who do not sleep adequately have physiologic abnormalities that may increase appetite and calorie intake, thereby eating Sleep deprivation makes the level of leptin, an appetite stimulating hormone, fall, thereby promoting human appetite. Moreover, a 1999 study by scientists at the University of Chicago found that building up a sleep debt over a matter of days can impair metabolism and disrupt hormone levels. After restricting 11 healthy young adults to four hours' sleep for six nights, researchers found their ability to process glucose, a kind of sugar in the blood had declined. In addition, Sleep loss also causes the body to release too little human growth hormone which is essential to keep bodies young. A neuropsychologist at the University of British Columbia, Coren says that “sleep deprivation affects focus and short-term memory capabilities”. There are brain events which are responsible for memorizing during good sleeping, so people have a difficulty in memorizing events and incidents with the lack of sleep. Professor Coren also says that “one hour of deprivation can reduce the IQ score by 1 point and that each additional hour can reduce the IQ score by 2 points”. Hence, if people continued such life a week, their IQ level would be retardation. When people learn something, they must consider it. However, if people do not have moderate sleep, the skill of consideration become worse, so people can not concentrate on learning well. In conclusion, poor sleep is easily caused by some of the lifestyle habits which look like common. However, the consequences of sleep deprivation are terrible for people. If people have poor sleep as a consequence of their daily behavior, some problems will occur their body, mental, and even learning abilities. Each of them changes human life negatively. The relationship between sleep and human life is very close.
