In this essay, I intend to define the terms popular culture and high culture. I will also explore how their relationship has blurred over time and which are the differences between those two. In order to corroborate my opinion, I will invoke a number of examples to support that the line between those two is vague.
It is a truth that, nowadays, the relationship between popular and high culture has become contorted and blurred over time. So as to understand their differences, it is necessary to define those two terms. Both the meanings of “popular culture” and “high culture” are hard to define. Traditionally, it was associated with lower classes and poor education as opposed to the high culture. Moreover, after the end of World War II, the media enjoyed great prosperity and as a result, were occurred great social and cultural changes. The meaning of popular culture began to concur with this of mass culture since it is accessible to the masses. This is a natural consequence since there are many definitions and therefore many opinions about it.
It is noticeable that the mass media have contributed to the spread of popular culture. More and more television shows, songs, films, and movies are being consumed by the public.
Not only popular culture is hard to define, but also high culture. As Raymond Williams said, high culture encompasses the cultural products of aesthetic value which society collectively esteem as art. In popular usage, this term identifies the culture of an “upper class” and aristocracy. In other words, people believe that it belongs to the social elite (1983). In the past, it is a truth that high culture was only part of the elite and the upper classes. Today, the prevailing opinion supports that high culture can be consumed by a few with great economic or educational backgrounds. For instance, visiting a museum, or listening to a classical concerto and opera is considered a privilege of a
He includes allusions to pop culture event that many people are familiar with. These allusions, such as Paris Hilton's arrest, famous quotes from movies, and a reference to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's relationship, act as examples of the effect of pop culture on the American public as readers are more likely to recognize these references. (Suver, 2011) The readers familiarity with the allusions gives more to the main argument of Suver's essay. Suver also maintains an informative tone for readers who may not get many of the references or fully understand the point Suver is trying to make, such as the moment where he explains high and low culture.
Technology, the media and institutional power may influence the future directions for Rock and Roll within the next 5 to 10 years. In the 1950s, rock and roll sound and style had challenged cultural authority. The rock music of the 1960s often challenged political authority directly and unambiguously. The culture in Northern America during the 1960’s and 1970’s was very controversial. There were several that were happy with it but several that were extremely unhappy with it. There were several causes for the protests that took place in the United States during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Allen Ginsberg was a prominent figure during the time of counterculture. Ginsberg lived from 1926-1997 and he was a very key individual in all these protests.
Culture, the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively, can be defined by music, clothes, paintings, drawings, TV shows, etc. Joyce Carol Oates in her short story Where are you Going, Where Have you Been? explores the effects of music on an American teen. By making allusions to the church and utilizing music as a motif she explores the moral poverty of American pop culture and the ways it makes people vulnerable. Moral poverty of American pop culture means that in pop songs there really aren’t songs with meaning, that they create idealistic situations.
Media has gravitated toward the center of our culture over the years. Mr. Neil Postman writes in his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, about his observation of the various forms of media throughout this nation’s history. Furthermore, Postman discusses has the media is shaping and influencing our culture. He writes about the idea that media has caused the world to lose focus of true information and inspiration. It is through this continued communal consumption that an individual finds social validation for their beliefs, value and way of life. Popular culture has magnified high school subcultural identities.
