Power System protection is the art and science of detecting problems with power system components and isolating these components. The protection schemes are applied to make an electrical power system secure reliable and flexible. The primary function of the protection scheme is to disconnect the faulty parts of power system while leaving the healthy part remain in operation. Thus, in order to clear the system faults protection schemes must be tested with very sensible way. Protection devices are mainly used for protection of the power system from any fault. One of the common protective device used in power system protection scheme is circuit breaker. It separates the faulty part from the rest of the live part automatically when a trip signal due to fault come from a protection relay. The principle behind protection is …show more content…

A fault is defined as a physical condition that causes a device to fail to perform in a required manner. Once the fault takes place in a circuit or device, voltage and current values deviates from their nominal ranges. In power systems, protective devices can sense fault conditions and operate circuit breakers and other protective devices to reduce the loss of service due to a failure. In a poly-phase system, when a fault affects all the phases simultaneously then specific fault is referred as a "symmetrical fault". When only some phases are affected, the resulting fault is said to be "asymmetrical fault" which is more complicated to determine. The analysis of the asymmetrical faults is carried out by a method generally known as symmetrical components. The main objective of the power system protection is the arrangement of protection scheme such that to detect and interrupt the faults occurring in power system easily. Some types of faults against which the protection devices are used are: • Transient
