Definition of Pressure Sores “Pressure sores also known as pressure ulcers, decubitus ulcers or bed sores are areas of damaged skin caused by staying in one position for too long” ( when people are confined to bed and are not repositioned regularly. They can start as a small tear in the skin but if neglected will turn into an open wound that drains the health and life of a client (Comfort Keepers learners handbook).Pressure sore usually form in areas where skin is close to bones or joints for example heels, knees, elbows, hips and so on. They can form more quickly if there is more pressure being exerted in whatever area they form. They can lead to infections and can prove fatal if untreated. As a care-giver, I will encourage my clients to take adequate fluid and eat a balanced diet. I will need to check the body of the person every day from head to toe and pay special attention to heels, ankles, hips, spine, tailbone area, elbow, ears and anywhere else the bone comes close to the skin. I will use good moisturisers, minimise friction and shearing and keep sheets clean and free from creases and folds. When washing the person, it is important to use a soft sponge or cloth and not scrub harshly at all. I will also reduce the frequency of baths or showers as this dries up the skin more. Using strong soaps and Talcum powder is advised against. As well as simply checking, it is important to immediately and promptly without delay inform my supervisor or line manager if I there are changes in the clients skin colour or I spot redness, warm areas of skin, spongy or hard skin, blisters or
