Professionalism in the Work Place What is professionalism in the work place? Professionalism in the work place means that an individual shows consideration and respect towards others and demonstrates a commitment to the profession. Professionalism also means a person keeps his or her word, demonstrates their loyalty, and honesty toward people they work with. In this paper, I will be writing about professionalism that includes attitudes, uniforms, teamwork, and effective communication. Body language is a nonverbal communication that involves gestures, movements, and postures. The message that body language can send may be intentional or unintentional. This means nurses in the workplace should be very mindful of their body language. People from different cultures, nations, and backgrounds perceive body language differently. For example, I came from a country where making eye contact is considers disrespectful towards the elderly. In the United States, making eye contact mean respect and truthfulness. Clarity and conciseness should be used to give and receive good feedback. Good communication makes patients feel valued. One of the most important things is to give the patient enough time to express themselves. Effective communication will help in patient care and give a sense of good understanding of what to expect in their care. The ability to establish effective communication in nursing is imperative in providing the best care and patient outcomes possible. Being able to communicate effectively as a nurse is vital, and boosts the nurses’ self-confidence, job satisfaction as well as reducing workplace stress, thus improving patient care.
