PROSTITUTION
The term prostitution is not a word that is new to us. The term is usually a label used to identify people who engage in sexual activities as a source of livelihood and daily income. Prostitution is an ancient activity and is described as one of the oldest activity women engaged in and has been called ‘world’s oldest profession’. This type of sexual activity is so common it is referred to as ‘normal’ deviance. (tepperman 2006).
What really is prostitution?
Prostitution is simply the act of being paid in order to give or provide sexual pleasures to individuals mostly strangers or as they call them ‘customers’. People simply know the shallow stories of what happens in the lives of prostitutes and how they conduct or run their businesses. The general public usually assumes that prostitutes are usually along roads at dark or wee hours of the night wearing skimpy clothes that are appealing to …show more content…

The research was done in 2006 and the article showed a case study of one girl (Annie) at age 15and a mother of one , who was selling herself in order to make a living. She comes from a good lower-middle class family background in Mtwapa and she says she got involved in the act simply because her father could not provide for her as she quotes “But he does not provide enough for me and my daughter, so I have to do this to make some extra cash.” She continued to say that each act with her customers would range from $3 to $8 which is about 250-700 shillings. She states that her peers influenced her to join them in being sex workers since she had dropped out of school.
Like Annie, most people in Kenya start being sex workers at a very young age and are mostly lured into it by their peers. In such scenarios you find that the environment around them is a hub for breading prostitutes especially if they come from a tourist location area like Mtwapa or
