The definition of quality television is often debated as there are many interpretations of what makes for quality entertainment. One can analyse a program based on its relevant institutions, audiences and representations. This can help to provide a purpose for a concrete definition of quality entertainment. This essay will identify the characteristics of quality television in relation to Bondi Rescue, an example of Australian reality television and the drama series, Offspring. It is argued that both Bondi Rescue and Offspring are examples of quality entertainment as they both contain characteristics of quality television. Channel Ten is a free-to-air commercial television channel; subsequently Channel Ten must pay for the production and purchase of its shows through advertisement (Elliot, 2009). Channel Ten’s target age group is 16-39 years, which is also the age demographic for both Bondi Rescue and Offspring. By broadcasting quality programs that attract and maintain a large following, Channel Ten is able to make a profit to cover any necessary production and marketing costs. Creating high ratings is essential for commercial television channels. Therefore, the ongoing success of a television show on a free-to-air channel supports the hypothesis that it is quality entertainment. Since 2006 Bondi rescue has maintained the 6:30pm time slot, which illustrates the quality of the show as it’s been able to sustain an audience at a ‘prime time’. Offspring runs for approximately one hour from 8:30pm, which is an appropriate time slot for the target age demographic. Offspring is a relatively new show, first airing in 2010; so the fact that the show has been allocated such a large time slot indicates the commercial and financial benefit it has to free-to-air
