Iron that is able to be recycled is mainly referred as a ferrous metal, “ferrous” meaning that the metal contains a considerable amount of iron in it. Steel, an alloy of Iron and a ferrous metal is one of the most recycled materials in the world; metal industries have been recycling metals for more than a century already. The general process of recycling metals like iron involves separating the ferrous metal from the other metals, mainly with magnets. When the ferrous metal is separated, it is then compressed into compacted chunks with a baler for ease of transport and transported to where it can be smelted once again so that it can later be used to form other products without needing to produce more iron from mined iron ore.

First, the collection of scrap metals. Many products and good contain recyclable contents of iron in them, these goods may range from automobiles, construction materials to common household appliances. Much of the goods that are collected will generally contain rust, which is essentially a coating of iron oxide created from some form of oxidation, meaning that the …show more content…

First, any and all scrap metal is needed to be crushed and shredded , this ranges from thin sheets of scrap metal to cars. Crushing and shredding all of the scrap metal is necessary because it breaks down the metals into even smaller pieces that can be more easily sorted down the line. For example, a large car can be turned into small chunks of metal that can be later separated with magnets. When the scraps are thoroughly transformed in very small pieces, a method called magnetic separation is generally used to separate ferrous metals from other metals; a magnet on a conveyer belt can be set up so that ferrous metals will be the only metals to be attracted to the magnet and the ferrous metals will funnel through another path and the ferrous metals will then be successfully separated from non-ferrous
