There are several reasons why I chose to attend a board of trustees meeting. I am very interested in staying informed about the decisions being made about my education. I also want to voice my concerns and opinions about certain issues that affect my school community, such as school safety and general education. Additionally, attending a school board meeting provides an opportunity to meet and connect with other students, parents, teachers, and community members who all share similar interests and concerns. Prior to attending a school board meeting, I may have several questions or concerns for the board. For example, I’d like to know the agenda for the meeting, who will be speaking, and what specific topics will be discussed. I would also like …show more content…
The board is responsible for setting policies, providing funding, and making decisions that affect the overall functioning of the educational system. They ensure that the needs of students, teachers, and parents are met and that the educational system is aligned with the goals and values of the community, as well as society. The functionalist perspective views the school board as a component of the larger educational system. The conflict perspective can show that a school board meeting can be shown as a site of struggle over power and resources. In this perspective, the school board represents the dominant group in society and is responsible for maintaining a healthy and lasting district. The meeting can be viewed by parents, teachers, and community members as a struggle for power and resources. The conflict perspective demonstrates the role of power in society and views the school board as a source of conflict in the educational system. The symbolic interactionism perspective of a school board meeting can be shown as a social interaction between people who attach meaning to symbols and engage in communication. In this perspective, the school board meeting is viewed as a space where parents, teachers, and community members come together to discuss the issues affecting the educational system. One issue that stood out to me most was school budgeting. The board members continued to speak on budgeting costs and how our schools can do better in the future with the money they're given. I felt that there could have been many different ways for schools to use money, but there were some ideas that I didn’t agree with. I felt as if many community members were being ignored or not heard well enough. There were many good points brought up by community members such as using the money to fund new computer programs or buy new equipment for school nurses. Every member who spoke had a good point or idea. I felt that I made a difference in my community by watching and participating in this board meeting. I typed many questions into the chat box, replied to a comment, and began to understand the board of education in a different way. I now know how hard the board works to ensure that students stay safe, learn as much as they can, and enjoy learning. I passed down much of this information to family members and watched it with them too. Overall, this board meeting made me feel as if I made a difference in my
“In addition to organizational structure, the people within an organization determine how the organization functions. The values and perspectives of these individuals can influence how programs are implemented, how the organization obtains money and other resources, who is hired by the organization, and what services the organization provides,” (Hardina, Middleton, Montana & Simpson, 2007 pg. 29). The following will analyze the Saginaw Intermediate School District (Saginaw ISD) and their ability to meet the needs of those people it serves as well as those individuals they employ. Stakeholder Groups Recruiting and retaining active stakeholders increases, “Greater community support and buy-in, varied perspectives, a better understanding of the community context and an overall, more effective effort,” (Morgan, Stakeholders and Collaborators, 2018).
Members participated on improving the school by supporting the staff and students, and also planning, organizing, and executing school
My learnings this week is about letting myself play every now and then, how uncomfortable Hyde makes me, and that “failing” is more than a failure. On Tuesday I was able to help and participate twice in the workshop Devon Damonte planned for us. After the Monday before and the morning of left me feeling incredibly stressed this initially filled me with worry about how my peers would behave and how smoothly things were running. After meeting Devon and setting up I realized that he has a very kind and calming demeanor which seemed to rub off on everyone throughout the day as he talked about 16mm film and projectors.
They did a phenomenal job of presenting us with the issues but also helping members of the community find ways to participate and elevate the deep racial inequalities in
I encouraged new ideas- such as finding easier ways to improve fundraising- into meetings that would be beneficial to my class. I have set an example for my class by aiding with the pep rally-as well as participating in it- and helping to organize the Sophomore Semi. Being able to lead in these activities gave me a
Politics also play a part in this dynamic on a large and small scale, from the board members who must campaign for their position to individuals engaging in self-promotion in hopes of improving their position. Legitimate formal power and direction comes from the top of the pyramid on down through the ranks. Perched at the top of the power pyramid are five elected county school board members and the county superintendent of schools. Below them are five assistant superintendents and at the next level down are a combination coordinators and program managers. Lastly, all other staff make up the base of this formation, having the least amount of influence and dependent on mid-level managers for resources, information and approval of decisions.
1. What are the primary issues in this scenario and what information is Principal Miller likely to need in order to demonstrate appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity in the school community? The primary issues are the quality of instruction received by all students and Principal Miller’s lack of knowledge regarding the political, social, economic, and cultural context of the community. To gain a better understanding of the issues, Mr. Miller will need to collect and review data.
For my educational experience, i attended a school board meeting on April 26th at the District center. This was my first school board meeting, so i wasn 't sure what to expect, but i wasn 't expecting that set up. I was expecting more parental and community involvement, those stereotypical parents who criticizes everything about the system. Instead i found myself with adults who looked like they were doing the same amount of observing as me. There was 8 board members sitting together in a closed square flip top, i didn 't particularly like this because a few members had there back faced to the guests and it felt like guests/other presenters weren 't as important or acknowledged really.
The text states, “The superintendent did have enormous power of initiative in virtually all matters concerning the schools: the appointment of staff, the selection of textbooks, plans and contracts for buildings, the determination of the curriculum, and normal decisions about everyday running of the schools” (159). When examining the formal education of our current educational institutions, it is evident that the power structure lies with superintendents, school boards and principals who share expectations on how classrooms should be run as well as decision making for the betterment of the institution and students. Overall, formal education has evolved and will continue to evolve as educators search for their perception of the “one best system” for their students. Throughout the history of education, power structure and social class matters have influenced how educators implement regulations, interact with community members and fellow educators, but most importantly, the education of students so that they may be instilled with the skills and confidence to further themselves as
I spoke of how much it hurt me when they were teased, and explained how much it lacked even common sense, still less the higher-order thinking skills our teacher was always talking about. I could not have my friends in the class during a business day, but I had the sense to tape my presentation which, almost for the first time, went well for
The learning event I attended was the meet and greet hosted by UPA (undergraduate psychology association) e-board. The meet and greet was on Monday September 28th 2015 at approximately 6:30pm. This event took place in Heritage commons’ club house. The speakers of the event were this year’s 2015-2016 e-board officers and Advisor.
This document will examine the generalities amid the negotiation process and relationship building between the Board and the Association. Participants To gather information on collective bargaining, two isolated interviews were administered. The two individuals will be addressed as Interviewee A and Interviewee B. Interviewee A has more than 10 years of administrative experience in the school district and is new to the negotiation role. Interviewee B has dedicated 20 years of service as a teacher, yet, is also new in the role. Each are employed in the same northern New Jersey school district.
Why the school system is bad - Arshia Education is very important for everyone and it will only get more important. Schooling is just plain bad. It used to serve a purpose, like the heart in a person 's body, but now it is basically just boring students more and more. Nowadays at the end of the day, we all just want to go home.
I participated in several school meetings. After working with students in small groups, I evaluated my mini lesson for student improvement. My students were able to work independently, collaboratively, and utilize feedback from other peers. This taught me to reflect on advantages and disadvantaged of the lessons
Looking in from the outside, I believe that this university does a great job with diversity, but there is always a need for improvement. Throughout the second week I thought there was a lot of thought provoking ideas that made me question who I was and what my beliefs were. People brought up great points, and there were a lot of ideas I didn’t agree with that were supported very well, and have made me change my idea on the specific matter. I really hope the class continues on this flow, because I enjoy the way that the class is discussion
