For words to actually affect someone’s fundamental right of religion we are entering into the realm of extreme speech. Words can change the world. They have done so, for good and bad. Words can comfort, soothe and inspire. They can also wound, enrage and incite . It is many a times said, that you shouldn’t criticize religion. Why shouldn’t we? To protect the feelings of the religious from dissenting opinions about their beliefs? But what about when the religious try to impose on others that they’re misguided and lost without religion. Are the others then supposed to just agree and not explain to the religious why they’ve come to the conclusion of their beliefs? The constitution of India under article 19 provides for freedom of expression but there’s a long history of wars fought under this article. Religious freedom undoubtedly is an important attribute of democracies. But it has degenerated in dogmatism and bigotism denying freedom of thought. All laws of the country are required to be compatible with the constitution and system of government. Even if societies are constantly in the process of change. Yet, demanding the right to apply one 's religious beliefs in order to abuse, oppress, and discriminate others is another matter entirely. Sadly, this is the new and easily accepted definition emerging of the term "religious freedom.” There have been numerous incidents where the religious sensitivities of people were hurt due to humiliating and discrediting remarks by people belonging to another religion.
