Introduction I was required to do a research paper based on any topics in social psychology for my assignment. The topic which interests me the most is the self-handicapping strategy. I have chosen this topic because I wanted to know more about self-handicapping and the purpose why many people are using it. In this present time most of us are using self-handicapping in our daily life. We need to know that using self-handicapping too much is not good as it can lead to disadvantages and can affect self-esteem. Another reason this topic interests me is because I want to know whether individuals with low or high self-esteem use self-handicapping more. Self-handicapping is one of the strategy of impression management besides ingratiation. Impression Management defined as an attempt by people to get others see them the way they want to be seen. In other words, people pursuit to control or influence the perceptions of others about a person, event or object. They normally do it in social interaction by controlling or regulating the information. The person who …show more content…
The first one is the sample collected is very little which is 10.So we cannot assume that all students in Segi University uses self-handicapping therefore a bigger sample was supposed to be used so that the results will be more accurate. Second, the questions which were provided to the students were too many because when I was conducting the survey the students took quite long time to answer these questions.
Recommendation
Based on research and findings I have done, not many researchers have developed ways how to reduce self-handicapping and to increase self-esteem among people. So in future the researchers should establish some ways to avoid or reduce self-handicapping among the people and also ways to enhance one’s self-esteem. Next, experimental studies should be conducted to examine the effects of self-handicapping on self-esteem.
In Robert Heilbroners essay “Don’t Let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgments” he discusses the many ways we use the idea of stereotyping in our everyday lives. Heilbroner reminds his readers on how stereotyping affects everyone’s lives in different areas beginning from how people view the world as a whole, to how people view each individual. According to Heilbroner, stereotyping will never be a positive aspect in life. He gives his opinion that stereotyping makes people lazy thinkers and that it not only harms the people we are stereotyping, but it also harms ourselves.
Stigma is a strong terrible label that changes a man or woman’s self-thought and social identity. Once a person is labeled by using others, it is usual for that individual to include that label into his or her own self-proposal. For an illustration, if someone in high tuition has been labeled as a nerd, may start to feel of themselves as a loser as a result of different humans’s opinions. Any one who has been stigmatized quite often has lower vainness and may also behave more deviant. Stigma overpowering other aspects of social identity.

A Self Serving Bias is any cognitive or perceptual process that is distorted by the need to maintain and enhance self esteem. According to Judge & Robbins, perception is defined as a process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment. This is an individual, subjective process and it is influenced by numerous factors including attitude, personal values and expectation and it is impossible to avoid bias. These can be factors in the perceiver, situation or the target. Attribution theory also plays a role in how we perceive the world around us.
CHAPTER FOUR Proposed Data Analysis Plan To describe the sample in this study and to answer the proposed three research questions, the following analyses will be used: Description of the Sample In describing the sample, the following data will be presented; distribution of subjects’ income, parents’ level of education, and distribution of subjects’ mean response values in the areas of self-handicapping, self-efficacy, and capital. A Pearson correlation and Standard Equation Modeling (SEM) will be conducted to identify linear relationships and the relationships between the measured variables respectively. To determine how the factors are connected, the distribution of subjects’ holistic mean response will be used to prepare semi-structured
Q 5 – Explain how diversity impacts on practices and experiences on person behaviour, interpersonal relationships, perception and social expectations of others. A – Acknowledge similarities and differences that exist between yourself, co-workers and clients. Culture plays an important part in a person’s behaviour, thoughts and how they relate towards others. An individual's cultural perceptions and expectations will directly impact on the way they work with each client and their co-workers; a failure to recognise cultural differences may cause serious problems when they are dealing with others in the workplace.
People are constantly observing behavior and forming theories about your competence, character, and commitment, which are rapidly disseminated throughout the workplace. It is only wise to add my voice in outlining others ' theories about who I am and what I can accomplish. I have used impression management to enhance my own professional image the accuracy of my self-awareness could drive successful decision-making when it comes to my personal and professional life. By becoming more self-aware and maintaining a level of self-awareness, even when everything around us is changing.
7. Reflect upon the dangers of becoming too concerned about one’s self-presentation. Your own views supported by at least one additional source. In our textbook, the author defines the term, self-handicapping, as: “protecting one’s self image with behaviors that create a handy excuse for later failure (Myers 2013).”
Name: FerhinAkther Madonna Id: 250502 Subject: Medical Ethics-Assignment 1 Stanley Milgram Experiment At Yale University, Stanley Milgram a psychologist carried out the most famous study of obedience in psychology. The experiment was focused on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal ethics. In 1963, Milgram was interested in researching how far a person would go in obeying an instruction if it involved harming another person. Milgram was interested to see how an individual could be influenced by committing murders, for instance the Germans in World War II. Milgram wanted to investigate whether Germans were obedient to their superiors as that was the common explanation for assassinations in the Nazi in World War II.
In Mcleod’s article, it said that people “‘think about, evaluate, or perceive’ themselves” (Mcleod 1). Mcleod talks, in the article, about how people thinking, evaluating, and perceiving about themselves is call self-concept. Whenever people think about themselves, most of the time, people are confused about whether or not they are pursuing right actions for their future, especially people with low self-esteem . Furthermore, people get more confused if their actions dramatically differ from others. However, again, people’s actions determine who they are, so even if their actions are dramatically different from others, it may be a path for that person’s success.
“When our emotional health is in a bad state, so is our level of self-esteem. We have to slow down and deal with what is troubling us, so that we can enjoy the simple joy of being happy and at peace with ourselves.” by Jess C. Scott, Clear: A Guide to Treating Acne Naturally. Most people want to fill their whole lifetime with happy and beautiful memories, even the things seem small and trifling to others. Due to the thoughts that emotional health influences the conditions of physical health, harmony of physical and emotional health become a strategy to have a happier life.
Previous studies have shown its implication to the phenomenon of self-serving bias. Showing that cultural differences, degree of relationship, protection of individual’s self-esteem, role of individual, academic achievement, and expectancy are factors that is affected and can affect an individual’s behavior. However, in addressing the question on the explanations of why people display self-serving bias. Some researchers suggest that self-serving bias is driven by their motivation process or they are driven by the manner on how they make judgments (Anderson & Slusher, 1986; Tetlock & Levy, 1982).
A group paradigm experiment found that participants who showed prejudice against members of an outgroup showed higher self-esteem than those who did not ( Lemyre, et al. qtd. in Pedersen, 151). Another experiment examined the relationships between racism and self-esteem with white undergraduate students. The experiment found that people with high self-esteem were more prejudiced(Utsey, et al.
Most people want to improve themselves in some way, whether it is to lose weight or give up smoking or increase their confidence. Self-improvement is something that we carry out over a life time, but it is a task that can require a lot of motivation. Keeping your motivation levels up and steady can be a job in itself. In order to achieve the motivation required for self-improvement, we need to look at the three keys that will help us succeed in our goals. 1) INSPIRATION
Disabled people are people who have mental or physical limitation so they depend on someone to support them in doing their daily life needs and jobs. Although disabled people are a minority and they are normally ignored, they are still a part of the society. The statistics show that the proportion of disabled people in the world rose from 10 percent in the seventies of the last century to 15 percent so far. The number of handicapped exceeds a billion people all over the world, occupied about 15 percent of the world's population, as a result of an aging population and the increase in chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, blood and psychological diseases that are related with disabilities and impairments. Every five seconds someone
