One of the biggest issues I feel the young people of, not only today, but for a while now, face is childhood obesity. However, in the more recent years I feel as if it has continued to get worse. With all the new technology that comes out each year and the decrease in the amount of work it takes to control and operate these gadgets, children have no reason to move around when they are being entertained on the couch all day. We need to get young people out and moving, I believe it is essential to have the youth participating in at least one sport and encourage them to go outside to play, it doesn’t have to be an all-day thing, but if you can manage to get them out of the house for at least an hour a day that is better than none at all. Shape Up America! is a not for profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of obesity as a health issue and to providing responsible information on healthy weight management. On their website they have a number of various resources that can be used by both children and adults in order to discover more about several lifestyle choices. From cookbooks to fitness plans that can be completed as a family and even calculators to determine your physical activity as well as your estimated calories to eat per day depending on whether your goal is to gain, lose, or maintain your current weight. This organization is dedicated to helping everyday people such as ourselves become educated on how to make appropriate lifestyle choices. Therefore, if we, as leaders, can understand how to make these choices and we encourage young people to do the same then we can begin to slow this continuing increase in childhood
