On June 30, 2021 the college sports world would be changed forever with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) creation of a new policy allowing student-athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness. An article from Maryville University stated, “The repercussions of court decisions and state laws that allow college athletes to sign NIL agreements continue to be felt at campuses across the country” (). The debate on whether or not college athletes should receive financial compensation has been a hot topic since the 1980s and sadly with college athletes now being able to profit from their name, image, and likeness many people believe that they do not deserve it, …show more content…

Additionally NIL allows athletes to reduce the financial burden on themselves.
College athletes bring in high amounts of money for the schools they play for, specifically the football and basketball teams. Despite being able to profit from their own NIL, college athletes aren’t paid from their colleges directly. It is only right that the athletes are able to receive portions of the money they generate for their schools. In a article from Maryville University is states, “the Power Five college sports conferences — the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, and Southeastern Conference (SEC) — generated more than $2.9 billion in revenue from sports in fiscal 2020, according to federal tax records reported by USA Today” (Should College Athletes Be Paid?
