The cultural and social norms can be described as expectations of behavior in our society. The individuals are expected to follow those norms and are discouraged from going against the norms in the fear of social disapproval. The social and cultural norms of Pakistan influence one’s behavior which further includes the use of violence. The traditional belief and background of Pakistan believe that men have the right to control their wives and discipline them through violence. These rigid gender roles make lives difficult for the both the sexes. Men in the Pakistani society are claimed to be less “manly” if they do not control their wives through violence. Women face psychological, sexual and physical abuse on daily bases. The issue of domestic violence is not openly discussed in our society thus it is important to recognize and accept that domestic violence is a common issue in Pakistan which needs to be controlled. Both the males and females should be given education and awareness. To promote equality, women should be given enough job opportunities so that financial problems do not hold them back from ending an abusive relationship, thus the government should allocate more funds for women. Doctors should provide victims with psychological support, proper medical facilities should be provided at lower cost and they should be easily available for all women. Both the government and NGO’s should work together and launch awareness programs by using methods like media, talk show and dramas to discuss the widespread issue of domestic violence. Most importantly a change needs to bought in the police departments. The Police department should be trained on how to deal domestic violence cases so that the women feel safe, this way women facing domestic abuse won’t feel reluctant to get help. One of the main cause of domestic violence is dowry thus the government should enforce a new law in which dowry given to girls should be limited. These strategies should be implemented to control and prevent domestic
Today violence against women is an uncontrollable phenomenon, which is a direct result of the rapid urbanization, industrialization and structural adjustment programs which are changing the socio-economic scenario of our country. "Violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full advancement of women" (United Nations Declaration1993) Domestic violence has attracted much attention of the sociologists in India since the decades of 1980s. Violence affects the lives of millions of women, worldwide, in all socio- economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, threatening the right of women to participate fully in society.
Sociology has its unique continual fascination in that the social interactions between people never stop. Especially in a group, people tend to become assimilated and take on the behaviors and attitudes of the others even if they are passive. That is, people might not even realize social norms when they reach consensus on how to behave on a specific occasion. As a crucial component of culture, norms are usually ignored. For this reason, ethnomethodology is a practical approach in sociology to uncover social norms by disrupting which people take for granted to see how others react.
The official statistics can be used to educate about the prevalence and immorality of committing domestic abuse crimes. As the message continues to resonate through society that violence is unacceptable, younger generations are more likely to mature without considering physical abuse as an option to relieve anger. (Mouzos and Makkai, 2004) Men who supported gender equality showed far lower levels of violence than those who believed in the ‘traditional gender roles’. Likewise, women who were more ‘traditional’ were also less likely to report incidents of domestic violence.
The sociological concept, social norms, is applicable to the content in the article “What is social construction?” written by Paul A. Boghossian because norms are socially constructed. Social constructionism only exists because people give things reality through social agreement. Social constructionism also requires a society and is based on that specific society, varying depending on the needs or values of that group of people. Norms are socially constructed expectations that effect individual’s behaviors and influence why people act certain ways depending on the context of the situation. Social norms could not possibly exist without the presence of a society.

To better understand the cause of intimate violence will help to come up will help come up with a better solution on solving this problem. Growing up as an Immigrant in America, you grow to learn social conformity is prevalent and plays a key role in the systematic oppression of free thinkers. Social conformity does not only dictate the way you view issues but also makes you shy away from letting your own beliefs be heard. There are many ways people conform, television and social norms being the predominant forces. By having observed these behaviors at an early age, I’ve grown to develop my own moral judgment and have met like-minded individuals who share the same outlook on the ills of society. Living in a third world country, America and other European countries are practically seen as heaven on earth or the promised land.
While the U.S. continues to establish programs and laws in order to see a decrease in domestic violence–––that is not the case in other countries. Even though, a great number of women experience domestic violence; there is a lack of efficient laws in dozens of other countries to fight against domestic violence (Alfred). Not having laws enacted in countries where the culture continues to justify the abuse only perpetuates the cycle of violence that women may
Research has shown that our gender and race are two factors that heavily shape our lives. While many people in our society tend to ignore how these two factors play a role in their life, I will be further exploring how they have impacted my life personally. With that said I will incorporate how gender norms and gender socialization have shaped my life and identity as a woman, as well as how my race of being a white person has shaped my life chances and opportunities. Gender norms and socialization structured many aspects of my life and allowed myself to have the gender identity of a woman. Over the past 19 years, I have followed certain gender norms that are commonly associated with identifying as a woman.
I strongly believe that there should be tougher law enforcement to protect against domestic violence. No one should experience or be exposed to domestic violence for it; affects family life’ increase the crime rate in countries, and it affects one’s body and mind. Firstly, domestic violence causes a number of effects on family life, it affects how family members relate to one another because they will not feel the appropriate
When choosing a social norm to violate, I wanted to aim for something that would be immediately apparent to those around me. Generally, I consider myself to be a rather quiet and reserved person. I 'm also very shy and softspoken and a little timid when it comes to talking to new people or around large groups. Because of this, I decided that I wanted to throw myself out of my comfort zone and attempt to be, for lack of a better word, obnoxious while with friends. It was an awkward day, but the reactions I received from my peers taught me a lot about social norms whilst also about myself and the influence of social norms on myself.
There are many times when I have been in situations where I could think sociological, but I did not until my first sociology class, which happens to be this one. Because of this, I have reflected on situations and circumstances from the past and concurring everyday life. These examples include being on an elevator, coming to college and meeting new people, having interviews with people of higher power, watching movies, such as The Breakfast Club, Sociologically, norms can be defined as shared expectations or unwritten rules. They can be Mores, which is right versus wrong, or Folkways, meaning polite versus rude. Norms govern behavior, collective, and includes sanctions.

Culture is a very vast and complicated term. As a result, it is extremely difficult to provide an all encompassing definition. In layman terms, culture is used to refer to symbolic markers used by societies to differentiate and distinguish themselves from other societies. These symbolic markers range from religion to customs and traditions to something as basic as language and clothes. Basically culture is a way of living.
