South Korea


South Korea is in eastern Asia and occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula and many islands. It borders both the Sea of Japan (also known as the East Sea) and the Yellow Sea. Its only land border is with North Korea along the 238 Km Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 4,000m strip of heavily guarded land separating the two countries.

South Korea traditionally had an agricultural economy, which shifted towards manufacturing, and with service industries becoming increasingly important. It has a state-led market economy which has grown since the Korean War. The country benefited from economic aid from the United States following the war. It has developed from being one of the world's poorest countries to become one of the world's top 20 economies today.

Korea does not impose additional fees for foreign students, and there are many scholarship programs for foreign students, allowing them to study in Korea without much economic distress.

According to ‘2014 Global Competitiveness Report’ of IMD in Switzerland, the education competitiveness of Korea placed 26th among 60 countries that took the survey. Korea also\ ranked among top 10 in the recent years among 65 countries that took the survey from Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) by OECD.
