Introduction

Mainstreaming of special needs children is a major discussion going on in various parts of the world. The number of children with special needs has been increasing in Maldives and still the country has no proper statistics of disabled children. So a study is essential to bring the authorities’ attention into this matter. This study regarding the successful incorporation of children with special needs into main stream class rooms look in to the details of challenges before the authorities for Inclusion and the benefits of inclusion. It also explains the strategies used by school authorities for Inclusive education. The study also explains the perception and attitude of teachers regarding inclusion.

No one can prevent a child with disability to join in a normal school. Even United Nations has accepted the right of a special needs child to go for inclusive education. UN declaration of human rights of 1948 and UN convention on persons with special needs of 2008 gave importance to educating children with special needs as UN considers education’s major role in bringing the special needs children to the forefront of the society. UN defined inclusive education as follows ‘a process of addressing and responding to the diversity of needs of all learners through increasing participation in learning, cultures and communities, and reducing exclusion within and from education. Main streaming means bringing special needs children to general education. Next stage is restructuring of syllabus by including special education and general education practices. Universal Design for learning is the third major inclusion process. This technique includes the teaching aid and other learning tools or kits used by teachers for teaching special needs students. Inclusive education offers a common syllabus for both students with special needs and others. It has the features of general education and special education.
