What is a sponge filter?
A sponge filter works in the aquarium to clean organic wastes, and also provides mechanical filtration of solid waste in the water. In simplified terms the sponge filter works by drawing water through an absorbent sponge material. When it does this, it captures the waste (chemicals and solids).
Material used in sponge filters
Mechanical filter materials include imitation sponges or foams, clay, glass and silicon products along with gravel. Materials with a larger surface area help provide both mechanical and biological filtration.
Sponges used are highly absorbent materials and therefore work by attracting various chemicals to their large external surfaces in order to be filtrated.

-Undergravel filters: this filter is run by air displacement and a water pump. A porous plate is placed under the gravel. Air stones are placed at the base of an uplift tube which forces water out of the tube and creates a negative pressure under the undergravel filter plate. This causes the water to push through the gravel which acts as the filter. If the stones aren’t used, the use of a water pump can be used too to create the pressure. The gravel acts as the filtration which captures the bacteria which can be beneficial for the aquarium.
This filter system is not very efficient as it is detrimental to the health of the organisms because it can be easily clogged due to sand getting in the way. If the gravel bed is uneven it is not effective at all.
-Corner filters: this is similar to the sponge filter; however, it is more complex and dangerous for small fish. This filter is a box that is placed in the corner at the bottom of the tank. Water enters in one slit and goes through filter media and then out in the tank.
This is dangerous as small fish can swim in the filter. It is also a disadvantaged filter due to the fact that it is only suitable for small

We found a little number of Phosphates and Nitrates in the water. That is healthy because these two chemicals are in fertilizers and detergents, they can harm the creek and all the creatures living in the creek. They get into the water through the eutrophication process. Bacteria eat phosphates and nitrates so that means there is a little number of bacteria in this creek. The dissolved oxygen level of the creek is high which is healthy.
Environmental Science and Sustainability (SCI201 -1504A -07) Instructor: Trena Woolridge Unit 4- Discussion Board Amanda Kranning October 27, 2015 Eutrophication is a syndrome of ecosystem responses to human activities that fertilize water bodies with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), often leading to changes in animal and plant populations and degradation of water and habitat quality.(Cloern, Krantz, & Hogan, 2013) Eutrophication forms when an abundance of nitrogen and phosphorus increases growth within an environment.
This lab uses a lake simulation to study how the addition of nutrients and toxins can affect the lake, its inhabitants and the surrounding area. There is a strong focus on the addition of Phosphorous and added toxins because both are key elements in growth in lakes. The Virtual lake includes these five simulated species; green algae, cyanobacteria, bosmina, daphnia, and trout. There are two types of phytoplankton in the lake model, green algae and cyanobacteria. Green algae are a very diverse group that are photosynthetic, aquatic, plant like organisms that have a very simple reproductive structure.
“Maybe it was better to break a man’s leg than to break his heart.” When you hurt a person their heart may never heal. Therefore, if you have no choice but hurt a character it’s better to “break their leg” than to hurt their heart. A leg can heal substantially quicker and easier than a heart. This is exactly what the story Seabiscuit is about, it’s about taking hits and still pushing forward to achieve exceptional accomplishments.
The built-in probe in the chamber measured the dissolved oxygen concentration in the chamber’s water (mg/L), which could reflect the oxygen consumption rate of goldfish. After the fish accommodated to the new environment, the oxygen concentration data were collected every 20 seconds for 10 minutes by the Logger Lite program. The data were then plotted into a scatter chart and analyzed with a linear trendline, to obtain
While in Australia, I started to filter myth from reality. I have to set my objectives and goals and how to achieve them. I needed no one to tell me what Australia is and what opportunities are available. My struggle began. I moved from different state to the other in search for work.
Introduction The John Rhodes Community Centre Pool (John Rhodes) is a public pool owned by the City of Sault Ste. Marie that offers public swim and swimming lessons (Matthews, Radford, Maxfield, McCaig, McCaig,vClargo, & Cotgreave, n.d.) Problem Statement
Eutrophication, which is excessive richness of nutrients in any form of body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen, is another reason why the creek could be polluted. Fertilizers are used in farming to provide crops with nutrients, but they also play a big role in the Eutrophication process. If too much fertilizer is used, it leaches from the soil in
The Puget Sound, home to wildlife and some of the business of this region, is dirty. Specifically, it is dirty with the toxins in people’s lives. The Puget Sound may be recovering, but it is still polluted. With people polluting the Puget Sound, people, businesses, and marine life may be harmed. The Puget Sound is polluted, largely because of people’s actions.
When analyzing the book Waterlily, by Ella Cara Deloria, it is important to recognize the vital relationship she illustrates between the Dakota Sioux tribe and their values of kinship. The book both incorporates the complex nature of kinship, but also constructs a comprehensive timeline of the traditional lives of the Dakota Sioux and how the interact within their society. Deloria strives at epitomizing how important kinship is in everyday life for the Dakota Sioux; and how it keeps them organized into one exhaustive, organized society, thus allowing them to stand together in solidarity. The entire idea of how vital kinship is for the Dakota Sioux tribe is exemplified in the beginning of Waterlily, when Blue Bird and her grandmother leave the camp in order to gather food for the merciless winter which was ahead of them. After returning to their camp they were shocked to find that the camp had been ravaged, with the inhabitants of it either missing or slain.
Therefore to get rid of these, coagulants and flocculants would need be used to separate them from the
Growing up I have had many inspirational figures throughout out my life. However, one in particular has a had a larger impact on my life than most. It is someone that I still learn from and want to be more like. I grew up watching him and that is why if I can spend a day with anyone, it would be SpongeBob SquarePants.
Big Data in Ocean Pollution Analysis Abstract Ocean pollution analysis is entering into big data era with the exponential growth of information technology and increase in the possible sources of ocean water contaminant as well as advancement in ocean observation techniques. The data collected by the various ocean observation and water analysis platforms answer a range of important research question which are crucial in reducing ocean pollution. Given the huge and diverse types of data, sustained measurement and the potential use of the collected data, ocean pollution can be analyze by big data theory. Marine pollution occurs when chemicals, particles, residual agricultural wastes, residential waste and invasive organisms find their way into ocean either through land run off or through point source into the water sources.
Introduction By the year 2025, the Philippines is believed to be brought to a water crisis if no new sources of water are developed or found to meet the growing demand of the citizens. (Sapnu, R., Balabo, D., & Cervantes, D., 2007) "There is a Japan International Cooperation Agency study that says that if we will not conserve water, there may be some problems. But of course we can always start conserving now and look for other sources," Lopez (2013) said. Studies have shown how water conservation and appropriate water utilization are significant as early as today.
