Sports played an important part in shaping of a national consciousness among the Chinese people and consolidated the unity of the country, China.

China’s sporting glories has been an essential part of the strategies of Chinese nationalists, politicians and educationalists, who aimed at achieving national salvation. In the past years, China has topped many Olympic/Asian Games with countless gold medals. Is this success something to cheer about?

In my opinion, achieving gold medals in games is not the most important thing. One very good example is the 2013 East Asian Games in Tianjin, China. Furthermore, in the development of mass sport, more playgrounds and sports facilities were built to serve local communities in both urban and rural China. In recent years, there are an increasing number of citizens who take part regularly in sports and leisure activities.
Sports played an important role in establishing China's international image and helped to fulfil China's ambitions for modernisation. However, with the further development of the market economy, elite sport system is facing some major difficulties.
