Abandoned Olympic venues decay despite promises to restore them in Rio. (Drehs and Lajolo 2). In Pyeongchang, 58,000 trees in a virgin forest were removed (McCurry 3). Even though cities bid millions to host the Olympics, hosting the Olympics produces negative impacts on the overall economy, the development of the city, and the environment of the host city and its surrounding areas; thus, all these effects indicate that the Olympics may not be worth hosting.
Las Vegas has remained a dominant vacation destination. “people go just as much for shopping, partying, restaurants, and shows as they do for gambling” (Hoium 1). When considering revenue alone, only one third of income that Las Vegas brings in is solely from gambling, where as, in Atlantic City almost sixty percent of their revenue is dependent upon the gambling industry. Atlantic City needs to shift the focus from gambling to family oriented events. If the City can create a family atmosphere with shopping, restaurants, kid-friendly attractions, and nightlife, they will have the whole
In his essay “Gil’s Sportsplex”, Gil Fried states that Gil Giles is always obsessed with softball and thus, he tends to invest a sportsplex after he retired (1). Fried introduces Gil’s backgrounds that he is a former police officer without any experiences in running a sports facility (2). Elsewhere, Fried demonstrates various industry analyses about sportaplex, for example, the definition of sportsplex is a facility offering multiple indoor and outdoor sports (2), and the “Sportsplex Operators and Developers Association (SODA)” propose some guidelines for implementing a sportsplex, such as “developing a needs assessment, feasibility study and preliminary design”(2). In addition, Fried cites CT sportsplex information, which includes the location, population, the charging fees, sponsorship packages, and the competing component research, as a frame example for Gil’s sportsplex (3-4).
Sports are something most Americans can relate to; many of us played some type of sport as a kid and some of us are die-hard fans. Sports have developed with us as a society and have become an interwoven piece of our culture and their effects can be seen in many cities countrywide. The facilities where these teams play can become a centerpiece of the local community and the teams themselves can bring people from all walks of life together in search of one mutual goal, for their team to win. The controversy arises when it comes to how many professional stadiums are routinely being funded and whether taxpayers should foot the multi-billion-dollar bill. This has not always been a controversy, however, as prior to 1953 stadiums were largely funded
1970s and Sports The 70s were a time of disco, polyester suites, pet rocks, but also a time that many felt self-absorbed and challenging. Generally speaking, they were mostly the time of political justice and the rights of women and African Americans. Therefore as the U.S got more in the 70s, they found themselves to be sinking down into a difficult situation of political corruption. 1970s Historical, Social, and Political Events
From the above chart, it can be assumed that hosting an international event such as Olympic Games leads a country’s medium to long term commitment to greater international openness and, hence, there is the expectations for the economy growth. It can be said that the Olympic and Paralympic games serve as a vehicle for expressing British national and cultural identity. Personally, I agree as well as disagree with this sentiment. I believe that the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic games are determinant upon the host city of the games. So, in regards to the most recent Olympic and Paralympic games, which took place in London and its surrounding areas, yes, the games served as a vehicle for expressing British national and cultural identity. However, with the upcoming games taking place in Rio de Janeiro the games will not express British national and cultural identity, it will express Brazilian national and cultural identity.
How Competitive Sports is Beneficial Children at a young age have a lot of energy, To solve that problem, they are sometimes put into a competitive sports team. Many will disagree and say that this is unacceptable , while others say that it is beneficial. Children should be able to be put in sport teams because most children play sports as a passion, and it not only benefits them with being athletic and healthy, It's also favorable to children because only its a game, it also teaches children morals, and life lessons. One reason Children should be able to play sports, is that playing sports is beneficial to the kids health.
Value of Sports and Visual Arts In today's society, high school sports are highly valued. With sports comes recognition, good health, and so much more. Although sports provide many positives for growing teens, they are too glorified. Too much funding and support from schools and communities go into the sports program, and while many programs out of school allow kids to take part in sports, rarely are there any that involve acting, music, and art.
