Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Sports tourism is a generalized type of concept. It points out to its indirect and direct benefits on tourism and the consumer, who is the one who travels to see or participate in sports-related activities and events (Sports Tourism, 2014). In addition, sports tourism is a division of an industry producing capital, doing work, and creating the image of a particular place (Durbacea-Bolovan, 2013). In the United States, a joint venture of Blue Collar Country and the city of Foley in Alabama will invest in a sports tourism project that highlights 16 multi-purpose athletic fields and a one-hectare events center. The events center includes an open space which can accommodate more than 10 basketball and volleyball courts, concerts, and conventions. Foley’s Executive Director Sports Don Stanley said that the project gives positive news for the city, continuing economic developments and creating more jobs (Anderson, 2014). The Cotabato City Sports Tourism Complex would be the answer to the city’s needs of providing a ground for the athletes to train with much advanced and improve facilities, a better venue for sporting events to serve the city as sports capital in the region, and to gain more tourists from different parts of the country to come and watch games that would generate the tourism and economic industry. In addition, this would improve the lives of local communities and lift up the image of Cotabato
