Saint Vincent De Paul was a French man born into a life of poverty. He lived from 1581-1660.A very grateful man, he enjoyed the education he received from his teachers, the Franciscan Fathers of Acqs. He received money from his father for his education, but it was turned down. He was ordained a priest at the University of Toulouse at the age of 20. At the age of 25, he was traveling the sea of Marseilles when the ship was taken captive by pirates and the passengers put into slavery. For two years, he slaved away until he was able to escape. Saint Vincent De Paul founded a few followings including the Congregation of the Mission and the Sisters of Charity. As a child of farmers, Vincent worked in the fields in his youth. He moved animals, barefoot, from pasture to pasture, without complaining. Because of his father’s high ambitions for him, Vincent studied early in his life at the Diocese of Dax. This was a primary school, where he learned basics of education. Vincent thoroughly enjoyed going to school, as he did all things. His father died when he was still a minor, which left him with lots of money to pay for education, though Vincent denied it. He wished to work to pay for his own education. Vincent went on to the next level of education, studying theology at the University of Toulouse. He made his way through school teaching Humanities. In september of 1600, Saint Vincent De Paul was ordained a priest.
On his way to achieving Bishop status, Vincent traveled to Burdeos. From there, he went to Marseilles to receive an inheritance someone had left him. The trip back home from Marseilles, though, was an interesting one. Mid trip, the boat was boarded by unknown and unwanted people. These pirates took the boat and everyone captive. He accepted a position as the assistant to the great AME Bishop Morris Brown in 1844. He became responsible for overseeing expansion in the western regions. His success was so highly tremendous that he was designated Saint Paul of the AME church. He helped initiate 72 new congregations and 47 churches which was a highly advanced arrangement between 1841 and 1844. His communique of his activities made the delegates in the AME General Conference so highly impressed that they elected him to the denomination’s Fourth Bishop in 1844.
In Jon Sweeney’s lecture and book, “ When Saint Francis Saved The Church”, he spoke about Francis leading a revolutionary life. There were two points that helped support with Francis leading a revolutionary life. Those points were friendship and poverty. Sweeney spoke about how important friendship and poverty was to Francis. These points helped with Francis learning what kind of person he would be and do with his life.

St. Bernadette By Haden Luna One Thursday, February 11, 1858, when Bernadette was sent with her younger sister and a friend to gather firewood, a very beautiful Lady appeared to her above a rose bush in a grot to Massabielle. The Lovely lady was dressed in blue and white, she smiled at Bernadette and then made the sign of the cross with the rosary of ivory and gold. Bernadette fell on her knees, took out her own rosary and began to pray the rosary. The beautiful Lady was God’s Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
His life & Education/Training: He was raised in a Roman Catholic family. Since his father wanted him to become a priest, he sent his son Calvin to the University of Paris in 1523. He was a talented student who excelled at Latin and philosophy and qualified to take up the intensive study of theology in France. By 1527, He exposed to Renaissance humanism by some individuals who constituted the radical student movement.

Paul understands that Catholics must give what they can to those in need as a gift of charity. Paul was a Catholic priest, so truly understood God’s idea of charity towards the poor, especially after the Catholic Reformation when the idea of all poor deserved help was established. Without the Catholic Reformation taking place, there would be no distinct opinion of how the poor should be treated. Beginning to grow less famous, he never gave up. Paul fought for his freedom until he died in 1976. Paul’s father was a runaway slave, and his family suffered many hardships. In 1915 he joined Rutgers University where he highly excelled in sports, and became an honors student. After Rutgers in 1919, Paul attended a law school where he met his future wife, Eslanda.

Besides Jesus, Paul, who called himself as an Apostle, was influential in the beginning of Christianity. People even claimed him as the “founder of Christianity”. Paul was the one that brought Jesus’s message to the world. He went on three missionary journeys, and the fourth journey to Rome in order to spread Christian faith and the development of its various institutions. In addition of his responsible of geographically and culturally expanding Christian movement, he also extended it as well as ethnic lines.
