The sun helps us in many ways. It keeps our planet warm, it causes photosynthesis in plants so that they can give us oxygen and it gives us necessary vitamins. Life on earth would not exist without the sun, but does the sun also harm us? The sun releases radioactive ultraviolet light (UV) photons. When the UV-light comes in contact with skin, it can cause painful sunburns in the short term and lead to life-threatening skin cancer in older age. Sunburns and skin cancer can, however, be prevented by following a few simple rules(1).
The sun, as it shines down upon us, gives us vitamin D which is needed for normal bone formation. In those warm rays, however, there is also radioactive ultraviolet light (UV-B and UV-A to be specific) that

Melanin is the pigment in our skin that causes us to tan. It is produced by skin cells called melanocytes and when the UV-B particles hit the skin they are absorbed by the melanin and felt as heat in our bodies. Deeper inside the skin, UV-A light is detected and it produces free radicals that can then cause premature aging and immunological complications. After prolonged exposure to the sun, the melanin in a person’s body can no longer counteract the harmful light and the skin begins to burn. Sunburns occur as molecules, cells and DNA are killed by the radioactive UV-B light. When the skin is damaged, it tells itself to heal by creating proteins and enzymes. The proteins, mainly prostaglandins and cytokines, cause the blood vessels to enlarge, and inflammatory cells to come and help the affected area. This rapid production of healing cells creates the red, swollen area of a typical sunburn. These proteins take around four to six hours to be created, which is why sunburns generally appear a few hours after exposure. When a person has been exposed to too much harmful radiation in a day, extremely bad sunburns can occur that
Family Rules Under the age 18, getting one bad sunburn doubles the chances of getting melanoma. Melanoma is known as the most serious type of skin cancer that appears when the cells that produce melanin become cancerous. In order to prevent this fatal cancer, parents must be responsible for putting sunscreen on their children. Also, parents should set a good example for their kids.
Lots of people want to obtain a great suntan for it gives a pleasing overall look. Nonetheless there was a great concern intended for natural tanning method. There are many deadly disease that affect human life. one of the most deadly disease is cancer. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues.(4) Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.(4) There are many types of cancer and one of the most dangerous one is skin cancer. Skin cancer effect millions of people around the world every year.
In addition to vitamin D deficiency, most people have heard that indoor tanning leads to skin cancer, but not many people do anything with that information. There was an incident with lack of information of indoor tanning when a teenager discovered she had skin cancer. She was a high school junior who wanted to be tan in her sparkly white prom dress. What started as a lark soon became a 20- minute-a-day-obsession. A bleeding mole discovered at at the age of 20 sent her to the dermatologist.
In conclusion tanning may be very popular and fashionable, but it poses numerous internal threats and external health threats. With the information about the threats, we need to put a stop to tanning and preserve our natural beauty. External threats such as malignant melanoma and other types of skin cancers, wrinkles, sunburn, and skin aging. These effects are very dangerous on the skin and can be avoided if the effects are known before the damage is already done. The internal health problems ruin the immune system, making it harder to fight skin cancer and other diseases.
The Dangers of Tanning “Today, more than 3.5 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States. That’s more than all other cancers combined” says Stacy Simon form cancer.org. In the article “Indoor tanning” it says that there is a “higher melanoma rates among young females compared to young males.”
On an average day there are about a million people who go tanning on a regular basis, and of those million people, most are younger, between the ages of sixteen and twenty-nine (Hochman). People who use tanning beds before age of thirty-five have a seventy-five percent increased risk of developing melanoma (Fellingham). There are approximately 65,000 new cases nationwide of melanoma and about 9,000 deaths each year from the most preventable disease (Salsberg). Researchers said that there is a death every hour because of melanoma
“Warning: That Tan Could Be Hazardous” by Sabrina Tavernise appeared on New York Times, in the January 10, 2015. In her article, Tavernise insists that indoor tanning provides people with skin cancer which might bring them to having melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer). Sabrina Tavernize says that many factors, including genetics, are at play with skin cancer, one of the largest is the ultraviolet light, which people get during tanning process, it exposures its non burning ray to getting melanoma. Teenage girls from different states, who were intervied said, that tan skin makes them feel “… more confident and more comfortable...,” when they walk around, but they don’t realize what the risk is. According to the information used in the article, tanning beds account approximately 400,000 cases of skin cancer in the United States each year, with 6,000 cases of melanoma.
since the skin lost its pigment cells, melanocytes and melanin, vitiligo patients have a higher risk of getting skin cancer. Also, some tanning beds ,which some patients use as a treatmeant, will higher the risk of getting melanoma (a deadly skin cancer). To summarize, protecting the skin from sun light for vitiligo patients is
UV radiation is a form of energy from natural and artificial sunlight. Excess amounts can cause damage to DNA in the skin. Although some argue tanning is good for you because it helps form a “base tan” and the UV exposure time is controlled. The truth is, each time you lay in a tanning bed, it increases the risk of developing skin cancer
The skin is an organ and the largest in the body. Not only does your skin protect you from harmful contaminants, such as bacteria and viruses, but it protects your skin from environmental toxins. However, the one thing that harms the skin the most is the sun. Skin cancer has become a very common occurrence in residents of Jasper, Dubois County, and its surrounding areas because we spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoors.

The skin becomes hard, thickened and cracked, swelled, especially in the eyes, face, or groin areas. Skin can appear darkened or leathery, extreme itching and sun sensitive. The most vulnerable parts of the body are the hands, the forearms and face.
The UK Cancer Research Center recommends getting enough safe Sun exposure daily for 15 minutes between 10 a.m and 2 p.m. A person with a dark skin tone may require 90 minutes, while the elderly require about 30 minutes (Vitamin D, 2015). B. Until now , Society has been misled by the beauty industry that the Sun is dangerous and that it causes Skin Cancer. They have recommended that a person should instead resort to supplements as well as Vitamin D fortified foods . Clearly , the Sun isn’t dangerous , overexposure to it is.
Intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors, both contribute to this process. As discussed earlier, UV-induced damage to the DNA causes a poor renewal of the skin. When exposed to harsh sunlight, an individual is also exposed to the UV light that comes along with it. Excessive exposure can cause premature aging in certain individuals and also is observed as severe pigmentation and sunburns as well. The antioxidants, namely vitamin E and vitamin C are majorly targeted by the UV light and thus, reduce the antioxidant capacity of the epidermis on prolonged exposure.
