2.3.1 Overview and Definition of Lecturer Traits
Good lecturers, are able to wheedle and motivate though there are lecturers who are strict, and emotional. There are studies that found that most lecturers teach according to how they have first learnt (Stitt-Gohdes, 2001) and how they were taught (Bailey, Bergthold, Braunstein, Fleischman, Holbrook, Tuman, Waissbluth, & Zambo, 1996).
Different researchers use different definitions to define teaching style. According to Peacock (2001), the teaching style is the way a person teaches by nature, habitual, inclination or even a custom that is used to convey information and skills in the classroom. Expressive style refers to the emotional relationship created by the lecturer to the student or the class as a whole, including warmth, authority, sympathy, trust and some emotional aspects shown by the lecturer. The interpersonal relationships between lecturers and students is involved in this teaching style and related with attitudes toward learning. Expressive teaching style works to control the students, managing classroom activities as well as negative or positive feelings toward teaching. Other than that, this teaching style is also associated with a sense of confidence in students and understands the purpose of education in general. Commonly, lecturers who practice this style will serve as a helpful mentor and could tolerate students. lecturers also believe in the existence of the best ways for students to learn about learning. On the other hand, instrumental style refers to the way lecturers carry out the task to assist students, planning the lesson, setting up the classroom standard and ensure that students achieve the standards set.

My personality consists of an intrapersonal, interpersonal, visual learner, who is social, security-oriented, and an introverted, intuitive, feeling, judging human. It is very common for teachers to lean towards a more extroverted teaching style than an introverted one. In the article “College and The Introvert,” writer Julia Fawal even talks about Daniel Ullucci, a college professor who relates to unintentionally favoring students who speak up in class. But, unlike many professors he knows that “‘Giving time for students to think about what they want to say is important as well. I think instructors have to learn not to fear silence’” (Fawal).
After completing the learning style inventory, I discovered that I am both an Active Experimentation (AE) and Abstract Conceptualization (AC) learner. Which makes a lot of sense based on my life experiences, I learn best when I am thinking and doing. I love to take my time on assignments and think about what I want to accomplish. Making sure to tackle a problem from various angles is always something that I naturally do. Once I figure out a strategy I apply the doing piece, trying and tweaking my approach until I have found an optimized route.
An effective teacher is likely to switch and mix new approaches to suit the objectives of the unit of work or lesson. As objectives vary within a lesson, the effective teacher will move between different teaching approaches or methods. The teacher begins by deciding what he or she wishes to achieve and then chooses the most appropriate method of realizing those objectives. By injecting pedagogical approach to teaching, students can have a better chance and can engage to physical education and sports.
The passage introduced three reasons why professors should appear on TV; gaining reputation for the professor, for the college, and to educate the general public. However, the lecturer disagrees. Professors who appear frequently on TV are not generally viewed as a serious scholar. As a result, those professors will receive less invitation to attend academic conferences or less likely to receive research grant. This seriously hinders the professors’ opportunity to further grow as a researcher.
Stations or centers might be teacher-led if new knowledge is to be given or student-led if mastery is to be obtained on the information given by the teacher. Project-based is another strategy and one of the best ways to differentiate instruction due to the students’ needs and styles are addressed. Projects internalize help and support among students beside some academic skills. Tiered Activities, on the other hand, are based on the learning tasks designed at different levels of complexity according to students’ readiness levels, i.e. to be gradually given to the students ,whenever the student finishes one stage, they transfer to the other one until the task is done, or at times keeping the learning outcomes same the learning tasks can be designed according to students’ learning preferences viz. Learning styles or Gardner’s multiple intelligences.
Big Five Personality Traits The five personality dimensions OCEAN are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism. This were defined as follow, according to Crissy (2011), Openness is the capability of appreciating art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, imagination, curiosity, and variety of experience. The characteristics such as imagination and insight, and those high in this trait also tend to have a broad range of interests were the traits feature in this dimension. Next is Conscientiousness this is the persons tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement; planned rather than spontaneous behavior..
Different teachers tend to react to their students in different ways, and their reactions produce different results. Dreikurs identifies three tyes of teachers: autocratic, permissive, and democratic (Charles, 1992). 1. Teachers attempt to ascertain students' motives. 2.
Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom. I believe the first characteristic of a good teacher is that he/ she is always willing to analyze his/her teaching performance. Second the teacher is humble enough to receive input about the development and application of techniques, learning from it and improving.

The various characteristics are: • Openness • Agreeableness • Conscientiousness • Neuroticism • Extraversion This model has gained particular popularity as it shows the different traits in a person which comes up with the situational change around the person. Shritika is an entrepreneur by profession and thus meets a lot of client in her workplace. Thus, she shows the trait of Conscientiousness in her behavior of enjoying her work and meeting up new clients is a part of her job role.
TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS TO TEACH WITHN THE CONTEXT OF HIGHER EDUCATION Teaching methods refers to the general principles, pedagogy and management strategies used to classroom instruction. The choice to teaching methods depends on what fits educational philosophy, classroom demographic, subject area and school mission statement. The teaching theories can be arrangement into four categories and based on two major parameters- a teacher centred approach versus and a student –centred approach, and high tech material use versus low-tech material use. TEACHER-CENTRED APPROACH TO LEARNING Taken to its most extreme interpretation, teachers are the main figure in a teacher-centred instruction model.
Success is a journey, not a destination. Looking back at my previous years as a young student has led me to contemplate on the lessons it has taught me and how it has impacted on my development. I always liked going to school and the learning process was enjoyable. Despite my numerous positive memories, one encounter with a specific teacher has resided with me for the past seven years.
