Everything seems to be moving so much more quickly nowadays. Why throw a grilled cheese sandwich on an actual grill when you can just toss it into an automatic sandwich maker? Why have mom over to show off your new apartment when you can just pop into FaceTime for a quick video chat? Why drive over to the library when you can pull up Wikipedia or do a Google search? In fact, why open a window when we can just check the weather on our phones?Personally, I didn’t think that people were overly dependent on technology until I saw a photo on Google images. It was a photo of people on a subway station platform. Featured were people standing up and sitting down waiting for the next subway train. We sit and ask ourselves, “What abilities have technology taken away from us?” The answer is our freedom. This generation, in particular, has become dependent on calculators and GPS systems to make our lives simpler. We have moved towards a more fast-paced society so technology has to be used to keep us moving at the same pace. This is not necessarily always true, being knowledgeable in basic mathematical principles can help us take shortcuts while calculation longer problems and knowing how to look at a road map to figure out where we are going may actually show us a shorter way to get to our destination. All these concerns come back together to show that there is a legitimate solution to all of the questions that have been posed about technology becoming the downfall of our society because people are no longer able to practice two of the most prevalent aspects of life from previous generations: basic mathematical skill and navigation with a map. Our grandparents had to live the lives that we do, but just with less technology and they have turned out to be some of the wisest people we know. How do they do it, you ask? By taking the time to slow down and learn these basic skills that can help us work more efficiently in our fast paced
