Texas's Political Parties have many factors and are ever adjusting for the people. For many years, Texas has held the majority of votes for a certain party. However, due to some of those factors changing, it is difficult to predict what is to come of the citizens’ political preference. Many of these factors include the overall purpose of the political parties, which political parties are in Texas, which ones usually dominate and why, and the issues of some of the political parties. Where the government stands currently is due to the past political parties and how they have evolved into the present. Evaluating these factors along with the state’s history will explain the current situation along with possible changes that could take place.

For the most part our country has two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, but it has not always been only those two who have been dominant. For instance, during the Jacksonian era, the opposing party against President Jackson was the Whig Party, which, at one point, came into the two party system along with the Democratic Party. The Whig party stood for less government involvement and they feared tyranny. It consisted of mostly protestants, and for a while gained a substantial amount of followers until its downfall over the subject of slavery. Aside from a few instances, the United States’ main two parties have tended to stay either Democratic or Republican. The Democratic Party generally has liberal views, stands to promote a strong central government, and strives for the government to be involved in social programs. The Republican Party is mostly the opposite of the Democratic Party by their conservative views and support of less government involvement, especially in businesses. Texas, just like other states, also has third parties that try to push other policies or concerns that the main parties have not recognized. The Political Party Directory by Mondo Politico lists some of the main third parties in Texas, one of which is the “Constitution Party of Texas” that leans towards strict conservative views like being “one nation under God” and enforcing “Strict constitutional rules” (“Political Parties”). In addition, there are some others like the “Texas Green Party” and the “Reform Party of Texas” (“Political Parties”). An influential group that is gaining support of strict conservative ideas is the Texas Tea Party that aims for lower tax rate, less government intervention, and is gaining followers which could have an influence on the Republican Party.
