During the second marking period Melinda starts to become a little more creative with her artwork and within herself. Thanksgiving occurs during the second marking period. Melinda’s mother was in charge of making Thanksgiving meal, but has to leave for work unexpectedly. Her father is now in charge, but he is not the best cook. He ruins Thanksgiving dinner and throws everything in the trash. Later on Melinda digs the turkey bones out of the trash because she thinks she will be able to make a memorial for her family Thanksgiving turkey. “Mr. Freeman is thrilled. He tells me to work on the bird but keep thinking tree” (Anderson, 61). Melinda tries to make different art pieces out of the turkey bones, but she can’t quite make something that she …show more content…
A kindergartner could carve a better tree” (Anderson, 103). Melinda is still not able to create a tree for Mr. Freeman’s art class which also represents she still cant find the right time, place, and person to tell about being raped. One day after school Melinda needs a ride home and Mr. Freeman offers to do so. Mr. Freeman tells Melinda, “I’m seeing a lot of growth in you work. You are learning more than you know” (Anderson, 121). Mr. Freeman sees something that Melinda doesn’t see within herself. “Don’t be so hard on yourself. Art is about making mistakes and learning from them” (Anderson, 122). During this car ride Mr. Freeman gives Melinda advice about her artwork. “The next time you work on your trees, don’t think about trees. Think about love, or hate, or joy, or rate-whatever makes you feel something” (Anderson, 122). This was good advice to give to Melinda, the next time Melinda works on her art she needs to think about the frustration and hurt of being raped by Andy Evans. Mr. Freeman is an influence to Melinda and Melinda is beginning to like him and to trust him. When Mr. Freeman drops Melinda off and tells her, “You’re a good kid. I think you have a lot to say. I’d like to hear it” (Anderson, 123). Mr. Freeman tells Melinda that he will always be there if she would like to speak to
Although she had been averse to the project given to her, she gradually began to like it. It was the only class she actually tried her best at, as an outlet to express herself, even if it was just the slightest bit. Over the next couple weeks, Melinda started to eat lunch with Heather and went on a couple trips to Heather’s home. The two formed an unhealthy friendship where Heather did about 90 percent of the talking, as she was much more social then Melinda. She wanted to be popular, however, which meant joining a one of the many cliques of high school.
It was the only class she was able to get an A in which showed to prove that the class was doing her good. With Mr.Freeman, he helped her not only see the beauty in art, but to see how life corporates with it. At first, Melinda egt a topic drawn out of a (bowl?) and has to work with it all year long to make it portray more than just artwork. He wanted every student to show expression and emotion in their produced works involving their topic. With this all year long project, Melinda slowly was able to learn her own colors as well as the people around her too.
In much the same way, what goes on inside of us is like the roots of a tree. " When reading the novel Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the reader will steadily notice that, as the story goes on, Melinda's artistic abilities will improve. In this essay, I will explain how trees are used to portray Melinda's transformation, by using quotes from the text and support to back it up. In her first Art class, Melinda randomly chooses the "tree" as the object she will try to draw for the rest of her school year.
When the moment of truth came, the turkey, browned and glistening, was brought to the table, when suddenly silence enveloped the room; nobody knew how to carve it. My dad, a cardiologist, volunteered to apply his surgical skills, but he failed. Probably because we brined the turkey for too long, it fell apart disastrously. Although the turkey was less than perfect, we all had a good laugh, creating a bond that will never crumble the way our first Thanksgiving turkey did.
Every Thanksgiving and Easter, John would bring his camera to take pictures of all of the family together. Every year John would make a yearly calendar with everybody's picture in it and all of the family’s birthdays. He takes pictures so that he can have pictures of everybody for the calendar. On Thanksgiving, John and Ellie usually arrive at Debbie’s house about fifteen minutes before dinner starts so he doesn’t really have time to take pictures. When the dinner is ready to be enjoyed John calls for everyone’s attention.
Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is very different in many ways to many different people. For example, some people like to eat ham over eating turkey. Others might be that they like apple pie over pumpkin pie. You can also change your thanksgiving by just a simple thing as going Black Friday Shopping or not. Little things about this holiday makes it special in different ways to different people.
My Thanksgiving. My Thanksgiving started when I woke up last Thursday. When I woke up,I got on my Ipad and waited for family to come,as my mom, grandma, and sister were cooking. When i was web surfing i came across a video that said” How to make a terrarium and i got inspired.
Thanksgiving Dinner for the Masses…Simplified Food is such a huge part of the holiday season so it just makes sense that Thanksgiving is my family’s favorite. My home has become the gathering place for all of our holiday meals since it is big enough to accommodate our extended families. Without a plan, cooking the entire meal alone can be quite a stressful ordeal. However, with careful planning, organization and early preparation of classic dishes, the day of Thanksgiving can be easy, enjoyable and stress free.
The only way Melinda could become happy is if she overcame what had happened to her. Her father, using the tree metaphor, said "by cutting off the damage, you make it possible for the tree to grow again. You watch, by the end of summer, this tree will be the strongest on the block."(pg.187) This statement from her father is not only about the trees, but it is about Melinda’s own personal growth and healing. Melinda becomes more confident at the end of the school year.
Growing up in a middle-class family, we always had more than enough to share, especially during the holidays. Thanksgiving in my family can be described as a rambunctious cacophony of mashed starches, oversized sweaters, and a plethora of delicious smoked meats. My mother slaved over gurgling pots of tart cranberries, spiced apples and mulled wine, and my father would set off to smoke the turkey, crack open a pale ale and listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Our family would gather around our Thanksgiving feast and portion out the lavish dinner and our thanks; "I'm truly grateful for this moment, but I feel spoiled...
It was Thanksgiving Day on November 27, 2014. My family and I had just arrived at my great-aunt’s opulent lake-side house for Thanksgiving dinner. As soon as we walked through the grand wooden door, my nostrils inhaled a myriad of splendid aromas, and I felt as if nothing could ruin this wonderful (food-filled) day. I quickly realized the house was packed to the brim with many other obnoxious relatives and family friends, yet my mood did not turn sour. As the evening continued, I had come to the realization that I was not feeling all that well, but I was determined to make it through to dinnertime.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 When Thanksgiving Day rolls around, I am always reminded of the Scripture verse noted above and there is a very good reason for the verse to come to my mind. You see, on my husbands and my 25th Wedding Anniversary on July 12, 2000, our house caught fire and we lost so many mementos and memorabilia. There were many things that simply melted away and other things that were ruined by the extensive and voluminous water damage, as local firemen fought to extinguish the fire.
I, Shaq the Turkey, hate Thanksgiving. I was born on March 28th 2010. My parents were killed in October to be eaten for Thanksgiving in November. I, however, was taken to a Turkey Camp. All of the newborn Turkeys went to Camps when they were born.
Thanksgiving isn’t just a rudimentary holiday to my family and me. It means much more to us. Every Thanksgiving something new and exciting takes place, creating more memories for us to cherish. Thanksgiving is full of traditions that have carried on for many years. My family is very blessed with everything we possess, during Thanksgiving is time for us to recognize those things and thank God for allowing us to have them.
My Regret Thanksgiving. This was a time of year that I really enjoyed. I got to see family that I normally never see and to this day am still confused exactly how I am related to most of them. Despite that I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the people, the food, and as cheesy as it sounds the loving atmosphere that it came with.
