Titles often carry symbolic or even thematic significance. Arthur Miller did just that when considering the title for his most famous play and book The Crucible. The word “crucible” means "a container for melting or purifying metals" and "a severe test." Miller uses his best characters Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Rebecca Nurse; to show the meaning of the word “Crucible”. Abigail came up with all of these accusations to get back at him. Further on in the story, John Proctor tries to tell everyone the truth but Mary Warren lies and tells everyone he is a witch because she cares about what Abigail will do to her (Miller 1329-1331). After all of this happens, Danforth and other men come to get John to write his name on the written confession. When they do this, he basically tells them “I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name, God knows how black my sins are! It is enough.” John said this because he doesn't want people to see him confessing to lies he never did. John Proctor lets them hang him so he can confess his sin to God and can be a free man because of the severe tests that he endured. He even states, “I have three children - how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I sold my friends?” John sees from the beginning of the story that this witch hunt is all a massive ruse, comprised of false accusations and mass hysteria. As the hunt advances and the punishments worsen, innocent people start to die with no chance of fighting their case. If John doesn’t take a stand and refuses to lie, more will continue to die and no one will stop to take a second thought.
