The digestive system is a group of organs that work together in order to convert food into energy and basic nutrients that are needed to feed the entire body. There are six main functions of the digestive system, these are:

1. Ingestion of food
2. Secretion of digestive enzymes and fluids
3. Movement and mixing of food and wastes through the body
4. Digestion of food into smaller pieces
5. Absorption of nutrients
6. Excretion of wastes

Indigestion can sometimes be known as the intake of food. The mouth is responsible for this function, as this is where all food enters the body. The ileums main function in to absorb the vitamin B12, bile salts and whatever products of digestion the jejunum didn’t absorb. The walls on the ileum are made up of folds, each of these folds has many villi on its surface. This helps to increase the surface area allowing more absorption to happen.
Large intestine – the main function of the large intestine is to absorb water from any remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body. Vitamin k and b are secreted by ‘good’ bacteria.
Rectum – the rectum is the final part of the large intestine that concludes in the anus. The average length of a human rectum can range between 10cm and 15cm. Primarily the function of the rectum is to act as a temporary storage site for stool before it is eliminated from the body.
Anus – the anus is the last part of the digestive tract. It is a 2-inch long canal consisting of the pelvic floor muscles and the two anal sphincters (internal and external). The upper anus has a specialized lining to detect rectal contents. It lets you know whether the contents are liquid, gas or
