A few days ago, I was sitting in a Starbucks café in a megamall, having an espresso while chatting with my friends when a sudden epiphany hit me like a wrecking ball. I observed the multitude of people surrounding me; a significant number of them were using electronic devices, such as mobile devices, tablets, Macs, and laptops. I tried to imagine the immense volume of information that flowed through these devices, accessing the digital multiverse, the digital frontier, the Grid. That realisation blew my mind. As online writer Andrea Kuszewski beautifully put it, “Never have we had greater access to knowledge than we do right now — limitless information just a few clicks away - the line between man and machine increasingly blurred”. Rapid advancements in technology have allowed humans to do things that were previously unimaginable and it has certainly made many tasks easier than they were before. Do I view the rise of technology as a foreboding prognosticator of the Intellectual Apocalypse? No. The problem is not the technology itself; it is the incapability of people to use it in the right way. The best way to make technology work for you instead of against you is to be wise about it—utilize it in order to offer you the time and energy to engage in higher-level cognitive activities, not as a crutch because you don’t feel like activating your neurones. If you are creative about how you transmit and process the limitless stream of information out there and remain cognizant about how, why, and when you use it, I believe technology can actually increase your creativity and ability to communicate.
