Throughout the week in class we focused our attentions around the idea of play. Play is having the ability to be creative in any situation, it can be done alone or even with others as seen in class with the various exercises. Play is being in a state of being that is pleasurable for you, for me it can be seen as a way to relieve stress. In Margarita Tartakovsky’s article “The Importance of Play for Adults” it states that as adults “play is perceived as unproductive … and between personal and professional responsibilities, there’s no time to play” (Tartakovsky). Even though play does not always have to be something that is fun, but it can be something that interests you and allows you to feel enjoyment, it will lead to creative ideas. In the Free Play reading it also states that without play there can be no room for learning and evolution, this is probably due to the lack of new experiences that would occur through play. The quote “To play is to free ourselves from arbitrary restrictions and expand our field of action” (Nachmanovitch 43), to me this quote means that play can cause a person to become relieved from the different stresses in one’s life and they can explore new actions or ideas. In class I saw this being represented in the game of people knocking over Styrofoam rollers and other picking them back up. The way that the destroyers were knocking down the rollers seemed to be a way of having fun and relieve some sort of stress.
