The early 1900s in Australia was a time of development and budding prosperity for the still-young country. However, it was also a time fraught with great tension between the settlers and the Indigenous peoples of Australia. Racism was ubiquitous throughout the nation, not to mention most of the Western world, and in 1910, policies were established that gave Australian government the right to forcibly remove Aboriginal children from their families in the name of righteousness. At the root of the Stolen Generation, the metaphorical heart of the matter, was racism. It was the foundation upon which the policies allowing children to be ripped from their families were created, and it was the reason behind the abject suffering of so many thousands of people. More insidious than the overt racism of the Assimilation program, however, was the normalisation of prejudice, evident in the off-hand comments made throughout the film. When Gail and Cynthia attempt to hitchhike to the competition they are performing at, several cars pass them by. When Cynthia asks why, Gail says, “It’s ‘cause we’re black, stupid.” Gail seems aware of the injustice of this, but she is already weary, and accustomed to it. After the concert, the owner calls them a racist slur, saying, “Thought I told you Abos to get off my premises.”

The major thesis in this book, are broken down into two components. The first is how we define racism, and the impact that definition has on how we see and understand racism. Dr. Beverly Tatum chooses to use the definition given by “David Wellman that defines racism as a system of advantages based on race” (1470). This definition of racism helps to establish Dr. Tatum’s theories of racial injustice and the advantages either willingly or unwillingly that white privilege plays in our society today. The second major thesis in this book is the significant role that a racial identity has in our society.

The ‘Bringing Them Home Report’ was a significant event for the civil rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as what they experienced between 1910 to 1970 was something no human being should have to go through, The Stolen Generations suffered a great deal of traumatic experiences. On 11 of May 1995 change, had to take place as this wasn’t a lifestyle a human being should live, the inquiry period began for The Bringing Them Home Report.
Because racism is so ingrained in our culture, it is easy to go on without feeling a need to intervene. This results in an ongoing cycle of racism, that we continue to pass on to our children. Sometimes this is done without even realizing it. Parillo states that, “ones silent acquiescence to others discriminatory actions is still a form of discrimination.” When institutions work in favor of one group at the expense of a subordinate group, in their ongoing day to day operations, this is institutional discrimination.
Between 1937 and 1965, it would be rare to see every Aboriginal person truly express his or her happiness. Although there were improvements to some Aborigines’ lives, the Policy of Assimilation did not ameliorate the lives of most Aboriginal Australians between 1937 and 1965. The assimilation policy conveys the idea of white superiority and black inferiority, manifesting racial inequality and discrimination against Aboriginal Australians. Assimilation policies prompted the forcible removal of Aboriginal children, decreased and oppressed the Aboriginal population and their culture and Aborigines had lacking rights to citizenship. Introduction The Sapphires illustrates the ways in which the stolen generation continues to have repercussions against the indigenous community. The stolen generation was a period of time where children were violently snatched from their families and forced into houses and institutions that lied, abused, and humiliated them. When the children were taken away, relationships were ripped to shreds as the children lost their sense of belonging alongside their beliefs. This loss in connection left unresolved conflicts and impaired relationships that by the time they reunited years later, the resentment towards each other had built and the argument was brutal enough for the relationship to become inrepairable.
She expressed, how she felt about her skin, and provided great reason for how she viewed herself for being colored. She spoke of her ancestors and how they paid the price for her civilization; so therefore, she doesn’t have to feel less of a person because of her skin color. She even mentions a time where she forgets that she was a person o colored until she thrown against the background of white; meaning she sees no color until she is constantly reminded. The author shows core values by being happy in the skin she is in.
The novel ‘Jasper Jones’ by Craig Silvey is centred around a young man named Charlie Bucktin living in the little Australian town of Corrigan in the late 1960 's. Charlie is presented with the issues of racial prejudice, shamefulness, and moral dishonesty. The 1960 's was an extremely dull period for numerous individuals whose race was recognizably unique - different to that of the “white” population.
Abstract Being an aborigine in a white dominated society is a complicated identity. Australia, one of the white governed nations, also owns many aboriginal tribes. They lived harmonious lives in the early period. But European colonization has made a profound effect on the lives of Aboriginals in Australia, which led to the total demolition of their native culture, identity and history. As a result the new generation Aboriginals have lost their Aboriginal heritage and have been accepted neither by Aboriginals nor by whites.

Overall, this film has provided me with a visual depiction of how stereotypes are a mental tool that enforces racial segregation and self-hate. The label of “White” became a necessity for Sarah Jane to achieve in society. To attain it she needed to move to a new city, change her name and deny her mother.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
Australia has always been filled with racism, starting with the treatment of indigenous people in the past. Many Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families as a result of numerous government policies. Most of the indigenous children were adopted into white families. They wanted to create a white society.
