Many who do not consider this point often return disappointed, sometimes even without completing the trek. Walking in the mountains is not same as walking in the plains. Not everyone’s body reacts the same way to factors like difficulty level of the trail and the altitude. Therefore choose an easy trek first so that you do not risk yourself or others in any way. Pack light: The key to enjoy that ‘first’ trek is to pack as light as possible. You do not want to be forever exhausted by carrying a heavy load and missing out on all the fun you came for. By the rule of thumb, pack only the things that are absolutely necessary and ditch those that you won’t even need/use in the mountains. Pack right: The weather in the Himalayas is quite unpredictable. Check the weather forecast before you pack. The winters are especially bitter, so invest in good quality winter wears; freezing up will be no fun. To keep it light, pack a good waterproof rain jacket that will come handy on windy days and also save you from the odd rain showers. Layering is the trick for really cold days and nights. Throw in a down jacket; the nights even on a summer trek are cold. Pack the fleece/waterproof hand gloves, woolen cap, balaclava, etc., depending on the
Led by Rob Hall, they were the clear choice. The climb was set up into five camps. Everyone would stay at Base Camp, but make trips up to the other camps to become familiar with the mountain. Once everyone was acclimated, they would make a run at the summit while only having to spend one night in “The Death Zone” (Above 25,000 feet). The climbers would be assisted by Sherpas, who are Himalayans who help with carrying supplies.
Mountains Life changing journeys are not the easiest to come by. Both John Krakauer and Erik Weihenmayer achieved such feats by overcoming mental and emotional boundaries. Determined to reach their goals, they defied not only their personal expectations, but they also defied the expectations of others. Krakauer was trying to change his life for the better, and Weihenmayer, being blind, wanted to accomplish the impossible. These men climbed and conquered massive mountains in their lives both physically and mentally.
Andy Harris, the second guide, strikes Jon as an extremely loose cannon. This is because Harris has never summited everest. This causes Jon to see Harris as just a fellow climber, not a guide. In the first third of the book, Jon seems be get increasingly worried about the climb. The subtle things like hearing about how unqualified hikers can pay enough money to be taken on the expedition, or seeing how some of his group members are wearing brand new hiking shoes (you are supposed to break them in on easy climbs first,) make Jon very paranoid about the upcoming climb.
Krakauer visioned the climb to be fun, fulfilling, and challenging; however, he soon realized that it was excruciatingly painful. He expressed early in his memoir, ”Secretly, I dreamed of ascending Everest myself one day; for more than a decade it remained a burning ambition” (Krakauer 23). As
“Why am I doing this.” said Ron Tipton when he was walking the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. This is the question that pops up into everyone’s head when they are trying to complete the Appalachian Trail. Everything started off 10 days ago when Will Henderson decided to deter from the Appalachian Trail. He had been hiking all of his life, he is 39 years old, and is a part of the National Hiking Association. He had began his journey in Georgia and was unable to complete the trail but got all the way to Tennessee.
In addition, another perilous situation that can happen climbing Mt. Everest is a great possibility of some people catching hypothermia due to all the exposure to below average and extremely cold temperatures as we know Mt. Everest can be very cold year round, likewise to the Yukon wilderness the main character from the story, “To Build a Fire” is when the main character is warned of how cold it can get in the country, but didn’t listen and laugh at the old man from Sulphur Creek in paragraph 15, but would later realize he should 've taken the old man from Sulphur Creek’s word a little more seriously later in the
Jon Krakauer is the author and the mountain climber of this book. He was hired to write about Mount Everest, so he decided that he wanted to climb it. It turns out that this adventure would be one of the most dangerous. His guide, Rob Hall, was going to lead his group to the summit of the mountain. His group has trouble adjusting to the climate.
The first attempt to climb it was made in 1903 by an American judge, James Wickersham, but it was unsuccessful. A much-publicized but fraudulent claim by the physician and explorer Frederick A. Cook that he had reached the top inspired the conquest of the North Peak in 1910, by two prospectors of what was dubbed the “Sourdough Expedition.” On June 7, 1913, Hudson Stuck and Harry Karstens led a party to the South Peak, the true summit. A climbing party was first airlifted onto the mountain’s flanks in 1932; beginning in the 1950s, this became the standard way to attempt a summit climb, as it reduced the trip by several weeks. Most climbers are now flown to southern-facing Kahiltna Glacier at an elevation of 7,200 feet (2,195 metres), where the greatest number follow the West Buttress route.
During the everest disaster of 1996 three expeditions led by experienced mountaineers Rob Hall, Scott Fischer, and Makalu Gau set off to reach the peak of everest. This 8848 meter mountain has claimed many lives and would do so again in 1996 the number of guides and clients of the three expeditions was 33 people but only 21 came back down. The greatest death toll occurred during the summit attempt the three expeditions left camp 4 (just below the death zone.) early in the morning of may 10’th in an attempt to reach the summit. The longer they were on the mountain the more tired and hypoxic (delusional) they got.

, it is important to note that the characters portrayed in this book are real people. The unique conditions and the weather of the setting forced the climbers to make choices that they could not have made in a different situation. The tough choices made by the climbers and the setting influenced the result of the story. Krakauer’s tone for the most part is respectful toward the guides and climbers, and he narrates as objectively as possible, while including his own concerns and doubts. His tone in the beginning expresses excitement and nervousness, but later turns into
