Types of corrosion
General attack corrosion:
General corrosion refers to corrosion attack characterized by widespread metal loss across the surface; this is common for carbon steels in a wide range of environments. This corrosion type occurs progressively over the majority of the surface of a metal, often at a predictable and more or less uniform rate. Compared with some other forms of corrosion, general corrosion is relatively easily detected, for example by inspection or various monitoring techniques.
Localized corrosion:
Unlike general attack corrosion, localized corrosion specifically targets one area of the metal structure. Localized corrosion is classified as one of three types:
1. Pitting corrosion:
Pitting corrosion is particularly insidious. The attack is in the form of highly localized holes that can penetrate inwards extremely rapidly, while the rest of the surface remains intact. A component can be perforated in a few days with no appreciable loss in weight on the structure as a whole.
2. Crevice corrosion:
Crevice corrosion is a localized form of corrosion usually associated with a stagnant solution on the micro-environmental level. Such stagnant microenvironments tend to occur in crevices Processes such as …show more content…

For example, Mg alloys were thought to be too active to be popular structural materials, but now the high strength to weight ratio makes them attractive in the auto industry as candidate materials for the next-gen vehicles. These kinds of materials have a corrosion behavior different from traditional alloys, and existing corrosion and protection knowledge or technology cannot be applied directly to them. It is important and challenging to develop further the existing corrosion principles and techniques to cover these advanced engineering alloys as
