Sports as a unifier "One of the big unifiers in this country is sports" Barack Obama Sports – a simple six letter word – that means so much too so many. It stirs the passion of fans. Fans came together to help create much needed change. Unity in sports is evident in any bar, man or woman-cave or Facebook newsfeed. Each person can be rooting for opposing teams, but there is shared community around the particular sports endeavour. We saw it during the 2012 Olympics. It is on display every weekend during Barclays Premier League season. It happens in the stands of Anfield in Liverpool. Sports as unifier are a needed concept. Never in my life had I seen a bigger spectacle. I remember days before the world cup started the Bafana Bafana bus pulled into the streets of Sandton where the national team was welcomed by a stadium of supporters of all colours and races. However, disappointment came about 250metres to the finish. Derek’s hamstring tore; he limped into a halt and then fell to the ground in pain. As stretcher bearers came running to him he knew he had to make a decision, so despite the pain he stood up and began to limp around the track. Suddenly a man pushed through the crowds, fighting back security guards … the man was his father. “You don’t have to do this“ he told his son , “ yes I do“ Derek replied , the dad replied “well then we are going to finish this together “. The father wrapped his arms around his son and helped him around the track. Shortly before the finish line the father let go of his son and his son finished the race with a standing ovation by 65000 people in the crowd. Derek and his father might not have finished first, second or third they finished dead last but Derek and his father finished. This race brought many families together as it was an outstanding example of the power of a father. For me the best thing to do is to go play a game of tennis or golf with my family and then come back home and having a Braai and watch the Barclays Premier League. These are the moments me and my family are united and these are the moments that bring my family together regardless of the teams we support or the competition on the golf course.
