Right now someone is crying for help. Someone has just been slaughtered. Simply for humans to consume. Although most of the population believes that meat is necessary for human health and survival, it is not. It has been ingrained into our minds that we need meat for nutrients, milk to grow and to maintain strong bones, and that a plant-based diet, is not enough to keep us alive and healthy. For years, research has shown that the vegan lifestyle is much healthier than a diet with large quantities of meat and other dairy products. Opting for a vegan diet is not only better for human health, but is also better for the environment, and is more ethical.
A vegan diet is part of a lifestyle that excludes the consumption or use of any products made from animals. Vegans do not eat animal products, including honey, eggs, gelatin, or dairy. They will not use clothes, soaps, or other products that are animal-sourced in any way. A vegan diet can be one of the healthiest ways to live. It’s a myth that eating a vegan diet is expensive by nature. In fact, vegan diets, in particular, are very accommodating to budget living and eating. Many of the foods considered to be staples in a typical, healthy vegan diet are very affordable. Fresh vegetables and fruits can be found at supermarkets and farmers’ markets for very reasonable prices. Whole grains, legumes, and other beans are also very inexpensive, certainly cheaper than processed and packaged foods. When bought in bulk whole grains and beans can cost just pennies per meal. And because they are full of fiber, they make you feel full and satisfied, without the dangerous saturated fat of animal
Healthy foods are needed for a well-balanced diet, however, price is another factor that greatly impacts whether or not an individual can afford
“Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat”, is a famous quote by the well known philosopher Socrates, who believed this is the perspective we should take when we are eating food. Unfortunately, the times have changed and so has the way we eat. We no longer have to go hunting for our food, or grow crops to receive all of our fruits and vegetables. Because we have become a society that has grown into the new world of technology, there would be no need to rely on ourselves for what we need-- we can simply gather our resources from other people. In the book, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”, written by Michael Pollan, takes us on a journey full of concerns of the “Food Industrial Complex”.
We must as the question, what is this commonly not doing to make this so cheap? What process is it eliminating? With food one might that that the most important force should be the safety and health of the American citizens, especially in a time where our country is seen by the world as one of the “biggest” and most unhealthy. There are cheaper alternatives to the expensive health items that contain less of the bad ingredients than the expensive ones have. The reason people do not choose the cheaper items is because the bigger brands advertise them as unhealthy and fattening and the people just believe it instead of looking into it more. The media spends so much time blaming only the processed food for causing the sicknesses and overweight problems that people face. She believes that all humans should adopt a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. In fact, Frazier states that consuming meat can “lead to spiritual disturbance and physical disease.” However, according to an article, “Side Effects of Switching to a Vegetarian Diet” written by Michael Kerr, informs readers that there are consequences for going vegan or vegetarian (01.14.14). He states that “protein is essential for the growth and maintenance of cells in the human body,” when limiting one 's protein consumption, it can cause one to feel anemic, dizzy and lethargic. Although there are other alternatives to proteins such as peas, rice, and soy products, they do not provide the same natural amino acids and vitamins that meats do.
In today’s world, there is a division among the people in the world regarding whether or not it is ethical to eat meat. After researching about eating meat and vegetarianism, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed ethical to eat meat in today’s society. Sure, eating meat might have its drawbacks, but I have found that the benefits of eating meat far outweigh the negatives of eating it. Eating meat not only helps improve people’s health, but it also helps strengthen our economy and it has little difference in the environmental impact that involves in the farming of vegetables. Eating too much of anything usually results in a negative outcome.

During his speech on TED Talk, he explains to his audience how eating meat has affected the world. In a calm and humorous tone, Hill proposes his purpose. He explains to his audience by becoming a “weekday veg” you will live a better live, it’s great compromise that will help people, animals, and the environment.

Eating meat is beneficial to humanity, because they provide nourishment that cannot be obtained from other sources. Without the support of animals, humans lack a distinctive diet, that is essential to their well-being. However, since animals are so important to the diet, they deserve great care and respect as well. Humans were always hunters and gathers. They always knew that meat was a big source of protein that helped keep them going(Araki).
Imagine a day in the life of a common farm animal. Far from the peaceful grazing life one would envision, the livestock of today endure horrific conditions - from suffering painful diseases to being separated from their mothers at too young of an age. Not only are these conditions harmful to the animals, the food produced by them is unnecessary to humanity’s well-being and can even be damaging to society’s overall health. Since the definition of ethics is having well-founded standards of right and wrong, this process of producing meat for our consumption is unethical.
Although people irrefutably need sustenance to survive, humans have developed an unbalanced reliance on creatures like cows and chickens as their main food source. “In the United States, about 35 million cows, 115 million pigs, and 9 trillion birds are killed for food each year” (Vegetarianism). This constant demand for meat illustrates the endless cycle of breeding animals and then slaughtering them. However, many first-world countries hold a surplus of provisions that supplies more than enough to feed their people, making the use of livestock pointless.
Is healthy food is more expensive than unhealthy food the problem Is the people tend to go towards the unhealthy it’s easier more convenient and processed food sometimes can be a bit cheaper. In a study that shows that eating healthy is it really that expensive maybe it takes a little more time to prep your meals but it’s worth it at the end. ”swapping out some of these less expensive, and less healthy foods, for fresher and more nutritious ones added up to only about $1.50 more per day. ”-Alexandra Sifferlin.
Being a vegetarian means that you have to exclude all foods that contain any sort of meat in it including all dairy products if you are a strict vegetarian or a vegan. Some people choose to become a vegetarian as it can help with weight loss due to the decreased calorie intake and the fact that plant proteins,fruits and vegetables have less calories in them and are high in minerals and vitamins. Ofcourse there are multiple reasons why people choose to become vegetarians but weight loss,saving the planet and saving the animals are common reasons why vegetarianism is growing. It is proven that being a vegetarian decreases the chance of getting diseases or illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes due to a healthier diet.
