v) Cantilever Racks. This kind of storage rack is called due to the leverage technique used to support the load-bearing arms (Figure 7). Cantilever racks typically contain a row of single upright columns, spread out several feet apart, with arms spreading out from one or both sides of the upright to form foundations for goods storage. The columns rest on the warehouse floor, avoiding the structure from toppling backward or forward, and diagonal and horizontal bracing between uprights avoids the structure from toppling inside or out. Owing to their long, unobstructed support, these kinds of racks are good for storing tubes, pipes, metal rods, bar stock, wood poles, and other goods of similar shapes. Figure 7: Cantilever Racks

The benefit of a vertical carousel is utilization of vertical warehouse space. Drawbacks are restrictions on weights, widths, and depths, and they usually more expensive than horizontal carousels.

• Horizontal carousels rotate around a horizontal track. A motor, fixed in the center of the oval, moves the bins along the track. Horizontal carousels can be designed into a much greater variety of heights, widths, depths, and weight capacities than vertical types, and they can be employed for many various warehouse storage applications.

• Drawbacks: The most important negative features are waste of vertical warehouse space. Typically, a worker starts either kind of carousel through manual, microprocessor, or computer controls, moving the preferred bin to the stocking and picking position.

 Benefits: Benefits of using carousels are higher labor utilization, improved throughput, better control, space utilization, simplified inventory control and replenishment, and integration with other warehouse systems.
