Warehousing

Warehouse is a commercial building or a storage structure constructed for storage of goods and for the protection of the quality and quantity of the stored produce. Warehouses are mostly large buildings in industrial areas of cities, towns and villages. Mainly warehouses are used by importers, exporters, manufacturers and wholesalers etc. The need of a warehouse arises due to the time gap between consumption and production of products. Basically, warehousing is concerned with the storage refers to the holding and preservation of goods until they are despatched to the consumer. Surplus commodities which are not needed immediately can be stored in warehouses. The warehouse provides the space required for such storage and it is the most important functions of a warehouse. They can be supplied as and when needed by the customers.
There are two types of storage which are as follows:

Planned Storage: This type of storage is required as planned to meet or fulfill the regular requirement of a customer is called planned storage. Every inventory received in the warehouse requires a storage for a certain period of time. But the duration of storage may vary.
Extended Storage: When there is an excess of normal warehouse operation known as extended storage. Requirement of extended storage are erratic demand, product conditioning and seasonality in demand, discounts etc. Some food items may be stored for conditioning purposes. e.g. ripening of fruits.

Financing
When all the goods are deposited in any warehouse, the depositor gets a receipt, which acts as a proof about the deposit of goods. Banks and other financial institutions also advance loans against warehouse receipts. Warehousing acts as a source of finance for the businessmen for meeting business operations. When the goods are in custody of the warehouse keeper, the businessmen can obtain loans from banks and other financial institutions keeping the warrant as
