BIOLOGICAL METHODS:
Wastewater derived from domestic, industrial and other activities is mostly hazardous to human beings,animals and plants so they must be treated prior to disposal . However conventional waste water treatment technologies are not effective, due to the high operational cost of the treatment processes and highly skilled technicians are required which adds to the cost. Current pre-discharge treatments of industrial waste water are routinely performed using energy intensive ,unsustainable low performance treatment technologies which utilize physical, chemical and partly biological treatment processes. Due to the presence of these compounds such as phosphorus,carbon, nitrogen and metal ions in waste water the treatment using conventional methods becomes ineffective and partially treated waste water remains undesirable for discharge. Water hyacinth is a common inhabitant in lakes and ponds. This plant has been studied to have high levels of detoxification effects in water. It is capable of reducing heavy metals like cadmium, lead, mercury and nickel. It is also capable of degrading naphthalene in water biodies.
Algal sewage treatment : Employing algae for removing excess nutrient load from wastewater by construction of lagoons is an effective method. This method can be used in a very effective manner to treat sewage water and gradually decrease the amount of pollutants. In addition, micro- algae can be used in tests for toxicity and in the study of microbial ecology as they have indicators that are sensitive to minute changes that can be used to monitor ecological changes of water bodies.

The algae comes from fertilizer that washes in the water from huge farms near the lake. The algae absorb a lot of oxygen from the water when they run out of steam and leave spots called “Dead Spots” which are areas where there is no oxygen so fish can’t breathe. Though this isn’t even the worst part, some of the bacteria that are in the algae get into our water and cause nondrinkable water. If someone were to drink it, they would get very sick and maybe have fatal outcomes. All hope is not lost though because Scientist are working very hard to solve how we can clean the lake.
Water pollution has been one of the biggest ecological issues in the United States for many years. Although there are many efforts that are working to improve this ongoing problem, the situation still is the biggest ecological issue facing America. Indiana, one of the most polluted states, houses many heavily polluted rivers, including the Wabash River, White River, Eel River, Eagle Creek, and Patoka. The White River, the most polluted among Indiana’s rivers, runs through the center of Indianapolis. White River pollution is the greatest ecological problem in Indiana because of its detrimental effects on wildlife, drinking water, and the environment.
The purpose of this lab was to test the effect of pollution on algae growth. Through a series of experiments that lasted a month, four of the six hypotheses were proven to be correct or partially correct. The first hypothesis stated that if 0.5 mL of salt was added to algae, then the algae would grow slower than the positive control. This was proven correct, as shown by the difference of the data from the positive control and the container with 0.5 mL of salt in it.
Yasmin Givens Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effects and results of agricultural runoff, as well as how varying types of fertilizer (conventional and time-released) may affect the ever-growing problem of eutrophication. If the conditions of agricultural runoff are simulated, then the algae will grow plentifully and consequently kill the other life in the water. If the different types of fertilizer are tested (conventional and time released), then the time released will be best to support and sustain the life in the simulated ecosystem. A major problem present today is agricultural runoff.
