Essay On Water Desalination

The earth is swiftly running out fresh water and there are few ways to prevent or reverse it. This paper will explore contaminated and salt water and how it can be cleaned. The earth is made up of seventy-one percent water and only three percent is fresh. As a result of global warming and human contamination, the fresh water supply is dwindling and scientists are looking to clean infected water. Based on scientific studies desalination is the best way to remove contaminants from water, but scientist believe other processes like forwarding osmosis, reverse osmosis and Electrodialysis for could prove more useful, effective and inexpensive. Desalination is a process used to remove salt and minerals from many types of bodies of water. The …show more content…

The rejected brine affects the sea salinity and turbidity and causes water currents, as well as increasing seawater temperature. The saltwater brine often contains low amounts of heavy metal that pass through the water as pipes and filters when they start to corrode. When this is put back in the sea it can infect food for many forms of ocean life. Beyond the links to climate problems, marine biologists warn that widespread desalinization could take a heavy toll on ocean biodiversity; as such facilities ' intake pipes essentially vacuum up and inadvertently kill millions of plankton, fish eggs, fish larvae and other microbial organisms that constitute the base layer of the marine food chain. Although desalination has its advantages and disadvantages it is the best way to clean mass amounts of water. Forward osmosis or OF is a process that works similarly to a filter in a desalination plant, but on a larger scale. In forward osmosis, water is drawn from the seawater into a concentrated salt solution, known as a draw solution. Then, a second step is required to make the concentrated draw solution and produce purified
