Natural Energy: Wave Power

Wave Power
Wave power, is one of many natural energy source the world uses. As the name already suggest it uses the power of the water in order to create electricity. It is a source that exist already a lot of years and is still being developed in order to bring its full potential. As well as making it as ecofriendly as possible. There are many machines that use the wave power to create electricity depending on the type of wave. For example there are tidal turbines that use underwater windmills. They use the rotation and convert it into electrical energy. For this the use of oscillating water column, OWC, will be investigated. This machine works similar to a wind turbine (How).

It has shown that including constructions, installations, operation and decommissioning of the machine would only have 24 grams of carbon emissions over 25 years. With only so small emissions it belongs to the ecofriendly machines (Lemay). The use of wave power can, when used to its maximum, limit the use of fossil fuels and so reduce various pollutions cause by this not ecofriendly energy source and give green jobs to millions of people. It is also considered ecofriendly because the source which it uses to create electricity, waves, never runs out. They require no additional help from humans in order to work. Another benefit is that it does not create any kind of byproduct as many other do, with which they pollute the world. Unfortunately it is hard to find any clean energy sources nowadays. Also as the machine does not have any turbines beneath the water surface it does not affect the population of the sea creatures. As it produces a large amount of energy it is very efficient close to big cities. This then gives the benefit that it is easy accessible. One last important advantage is that there is no damage done to the land. Unlike, for example, fossil fuels, which cause massive damage by making huge holes into the earth in order to extract the energy, wave power does not. It is clean and gentile to the land, as it takes it energy source from the ocean …show more content…

Though these tend to be arguable. One of them is that the machine does not look pleasant and therefore has to be put out of sight, as it also cause a certain amount of noise pollution. As for this reason it has been put far enough offshore so it could not be seen or heard. On the other side it has to be close enough to a town or other power plants in order to be successful. As the oscillating water column has to be close to a town or coast line it would disturb the various ships that dock around that area. So when this machine would be built it would disturb or even stop the workings around that area, which costs a lot of money. Another problem is that not all the waves have the same wavelength, so speed, energy, and density. The machine needs a certain amount of energy in order to work otherwise less or no electricity is produced. Another, but not as greatly depending, problem is that when the weather is rough, the oscillating water column has to with stand these conditions and carry on working. This is important because the material they use to build the machine has to be light enough to stay above water but also strong enough to hold up bad weather conditions
