Since their inception in World Wars, the production, distribution, and maintenance of weapons of mass destruction have posed a problem to the safety of humanity. During World War II places like the Edgewood Arsenal were necessary for the United States to develop chemical weapons such as sarin, a nerve agent while the Manhattan Project introduced the first atom bombs into the world (Croddy, 2005, p. 1). As far back as World War I countries such as Japan and the USSR focused on the research and development of biological weapons (Croddy, 2005, p. 330). Many argue that these weapons serve in an important role now, preventing another World War through deterrence, as in the case of the Cold War. However, all weapons of mass destruction should be …show more content…
While this is true, and weapons of mass destruction have the destructive ability to end wars, from an ecological standpoint, it would be better to destroy civilization in incessant wars. At least in doing this the complete and utter destruction of humankind and every other species on Earth would be avoided. In fact, one of the major reasons Allied and Axis powers worked to attain or develop weapons of mass destruction was fear. Imagine a situation where a smaller child is being bullied by children older and stronger than he. Now imagine the same situation with the bullied child holding a gun. Therein lies the point of creating nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. No nation’s leaders would be callous enough to attack a nation who can release even one nuclear weapon into the air, or millions of fungal spores into a water supply. Because smaller nations are afraid of larger more powerful ones, they seek to build weapons capable of defending their sovereignty. However, in doing so nations increase the threat posed by these weapons. Having more of these weapons only makes it more likely that enemies can get control of designs for the creation of a nuclear warhead or weaponized biological
Japanese Bombing The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was necessary in order for Japan to surrender, save American lives, and keep the Soviet Union from expanding its influence in Asia. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. held a conference in which they made it official that they were at war with Japan and ready to strike back as soon as possible. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made the Japanese realize that they couldn’t afford another fatal bombing and cause innocent people to die again so shortly after the bombing, they surrendered to the United States. Soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the United States knew that they had to come up with a plan to invade Japan and force them to surrender.
Was America right to use atomic weapons against Japan? The dropping of the atomic bomb in Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was the end of WWII. However, there has been much conflict considering the use of the bomb. In this essay, I will discuss reasons from both sides of the argument and justify my opinion.
One of the most controversial events from World War II (WWII) was the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On August 6, 1945, America dropped the world’s first atomic bomb, code name “Little Boy, over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion resulted in over 90,000 deaths. August 9th, 1945, a second bomb was dropped, code name “Fat Man”, on Nagasaki, instantly killing an estimated 70,000 people. On August 15, Japan surrendered unconditionally.
Imagine that there is a decision to be made to launch the atomic bomb or not. The bomb was launched but was it justified? Years ago during WWll, a scientist Albert Einstein sent a letter to the president. It said that Germany was creating a bomb that would cause major destruction and the United States had to make one as well. Scientists started making the bomb and it became the Project Manhattan.
World War II introduced the most dangerous weapon in the world, the atomic bomb. When the US used it on Japan we went to far and caused unnecessary damage to the people. Many people believe this to the only truth but, the real truth is that dropping the atomic bomb was a necessary evil we had to use in order to win the war in World War II and future wars to come. It save many american soldiers lives, stopped the Soviets from joining, and helped us win against Japan. First and foremost, World War II caused many casualties for both sides of the war.
In the twentieth century, the United States dropped two atomic bombs, which were the most powerful weapons at that time, on Japan. It happened on August 6 and August 9, 1945. The atomic bombs killed 226,000 Japanese and ended the war. However, America should not have dropped the atomic bombs for two reasons. First, it was not necessary to drop the bomb to win the war militarily or to get the Japanese to surrender.
By 1945, those involved in the Second World War were exhausted. There had been millions of casualties, millions were still suffering and countries were in turmoil. After six years of war, those involved were ready for it to be over. By the end of 1944 the Axis had collapsed. Once Germany unconditionally surrendered on May 8, 1945, the Allies were hoping Japan would surrender too.
The Bombing of Hiroshima The bombing of Hiroshima was the right thing to do due to the military lives that were going to be lost if the bomb did not get dropped, America also wanted to impress Russia or intimidate them by dropping it and the president saw this opportunity to make japan surrender as well. This all supports the main point on why it was the right thing to do but many to all Japanese say otherwise Lots of soldiers lost their lives because of the conflict with japan, in document B, it states,”123,000 Japanese and Americans killed each other”. Paul Fussell, a WWII soldier also stated, ”war is immoral, war is cruel”. This is speaking for all the soldiers in the war or most of them, this also means that he doesn’t like war and it would
President Harry Truman gave an executive order in 1945 to drop to atomic bombs in popular downtown cities in Japan. With the guidance of many scientists and political leaders President Truman made the extremely tough decision to drop the bombs. After listening to arguments from both sides President Truman came to the conclusion that dropping bombs would be the best thing to do for this war. It would also show that the United States had an extreme military power. Many American politicians were for the idea of dropping the bomb, because they believed that it was the only way to end the war and get Japan to surrender.
Thesis statement: Though many speculate that the act of dropping the atomic bomb on Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) while not doing so on Europe (Germany and Italy) was racially motivated, racism played little to no role in these bombings. The United States of America and her allies were willing to end World War II at any cost, had the atomic bombs been available they would have been deployed in Europe. In the 1940’s there is no doubt that the United States of America was engulfed by mass anti-Japanese hysteria which inevitably bled over into America’s foreign policy. During this period Japanese people living in both Japan and the United States of America were seen as less that human.
Theoretically of course, what if a country was to develop a weapon strong enough to completely disintegrate cities and all the people living in it? Coincidently, the United states discovered a bomb that did exactly that and ended up thrusting the world into a new era of weaponized technology towards the end of World War II. Countries from this point on became wary of opposing the United States, aware of the power they possessed, especially since the US had already used this weapon on Japan to end the war.
The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings were the first and currently last time atomic energy had been used for military purposes. However, the usage of the bombs has sparked controversy over whether the usage of atomic bombs was Truman’s way of expediting the war or the United States’ way of taking the credit for ending the war and stirring up conflict with the Soviet Union. Regardless of opinions on the matter, the bombing is considered one of the most brutal yet bold military actions by the United States in world history because of its impact and
"Ending the war earlier saved possibly millions of lives, both Japanese and American. "(Jake, closing statement) This compelling statement convinced me that the bombing of Hiroshima was an act that flowed logically from history, and we cannot in retrospect claim to know what the Japanese would or would not have done. However, I think that had I been there, knowing what I know now through compelling evidence from the defense team, I would have been trapped in a logic that ultimately justified itself: Japan surrendered, and Asia was saved from a greater evil. This was the major reason provided for seeking a 'quick end' to the war through the use of the atomic bomb.
But, are these wars a necessary evil so that the society create bigger and better inventions? Well the inventions that are going to be mentioned prove the opposite. Tanks: Is known that Leonardo Da Vinci was the inventor of the tank in 1487. It was designed to be driven straight onto a battlefield and to destroy the enemy with its 360 degree cannons. But, since these invention no more improvements took place for more than four
If nuclear weapons were ever used again it could wipe out all of humanity. The United States created the first nuclear weapon in 1945, and with those nuclear weapons they bombed two Japanese cities called Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Nuclear Weapons should be banned, Countries should not have weapons that could wipe out the civilization. Nuclear weapons pose a direct threat to everyone. They cause distrust among nations and they are useless in addressing any of today 's real security threats.
