Since their inception in World Wars, the production, distribution, and maintenance of weapons of mass destruction have posed a problem to the safety of humanity. During World War II places like the Edgewood Arsenal were necessary for the United States to develop chemical weapons such as sarin, a nerve agent while the Manhattan Project introduced the first atom bombs into the world (Croddy, 2005, p. 1). As far back as World War I countries such as Japan and the USSR focused on the research and development of biological weapons (Croddy, 2005, p. 330). Many argue that these weapons serve in an important role now, preventing another World War through deterrence, as in the case of the Cold War. While this is true, and weapons of mass destruction have the destructive ability to end wars, from an ecological standpoint, it would be better to destroy civilization in incessant wars. At least in doing this the complete and utter destruction of humankind and every other species on Earth would be avoided. In fact, one of the major reasons Allied and Axis powers worked to attain or develop weapons of mass destruction was fear. Imagine a situation where a smaller child is being bullied by children older and stronger than he. Now imagine the same situation with the bullied child holding a gun. Therein lies the point of creating nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. No nation’s leaders would be callous enough to attack a nation who can release even one nuclear weapon into the air, or millions of fungal spores into a water supply. Because smaller nations are afraid of larger more powerful ones, they seek to build weapons capable of defending their sovereignty. However, in doing so nations increase the threat posed by these weapons. Having more of these weapons only makes it more likely that enemies can get control of designs for the creation of a nuclear warhead or weaponized biological
