Millions of Americans are helped with the benefit of government assistance in order to take care of themselves and their families. Welfare has been around for over eight decades, providing financial assistance to those in need. Whether a person is going through a rough patch in life or they have taken advantage of the benefits for many years; welfare has always been available to them with the curtesy of taxpayers. Recent controversy has been brought up on if welfare applicants should have to submit and pass a drug screening in order to gain the privileges of government assistance. According to Washington Crime News Service, “states with some form of drug testing for welfare recipients include Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Oregon”(1). Many Americans are concerned …show more content…
One side to this controversy would be that because of the screenings it would lower and prevent the use of drugs in poverty struck households. Many law officials believe that if a user had to submit to drug test they would get clean because the need for the government assistance would be of greater priority than abusing illegal drugs. Though this may be true in some situations, poor social classes are not the only citizens abusing drugs. It is well known that drugs are abused by people of all social classes. America needs to broaden their view point on this social matter because it effects everyone, not just those who live in poverty. Barlena Cunha once mentioned, “… millions have been helped by hundreds of social services put in place by the government to stabilize families in this time of need. Yet, the states insist upon making the lines between the rich and poor even darker, even harder to cross” (Cunha 1). Forcing drug test to people who apply for assistance is offensive to those who are discriminated in the lower
In the words of welfare policy experts Robert Rector and Jennifer Marshall writing in National Affairs: Material poverty has been replaced by a far deeper “behavioral poverty” — a vicious cycle of unwed childbearing, social dysfunction, and welfare dependency in poor communities. Even as the welfare state has improved the material comfort of low-income Americans by transferring enormous financial resources to them, it has exacerbated these behavioral problems. The result has been the disintegration of the work ethic, family structure, and social fabric of large segments of the American population, which has in turn created a new dependency class. Is this the America we want? It is not compassionate to leave a whole class of people in perpetual dependence.
In Why Drug testing Welfare Recipients Is a Waste of Taxpayer Money, Darlena Cunha works to persuade that drug testing welfare recipients feeds the stereotype stigma towards those asking for the extra assistance and is actually wasting the taxpayer’s money. As soon as the page opens, there is a large image of two gloved hands holding a drug test. The picture is dark and the light is focused on a blue urine test for Cannabis and an Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC). As a result, the image automatically gives the reader a serious and eery tone.

That is not what welfare should be used for though, it should be used as an extra last resort support system for an individual until they can get back on their feet. This is why there are so many people on the street and in homeless shelters, because the government is giving them free money. This is why it should in the end be up to private organizations and charity. This is because if it is a small group of people working with the less fortunate they can get to know them individually and try to help them off of welfare or the support that they are getting. Granted there are some things that the less fortunate should have the opportunity to have and that is health care.
Those with mental disabilities are medicated legally or illegally without being provided talk therapy or any other form of therapy. Being exposed to such behaviors as drug abuse as a young child has detrimental effects on growth and development. These effects could be direct or indirect for the child could then use drugs themselves, be abused by a drug user, or lose someone to drugs, whether it be via overdose, prison, or murder. The expectation for inner city youth is to become a drug dealer or a drug user which neither is a positive and both are expected to live far less than those of far different circumstances than their
As a conservative think tank, the Alabama Policy Institute desires to promote policies that unleash the power of the free market and give businesses the means to grow and produce. In the book, Brooks cites various reasons that there are so many people in America that are living in poverty, and an unhealthy attitude towards work is one of the most damaging reasons. With the government 's expanded welfare system, Brooks argues that the people who are receiving these benefits often get their benefits taken away when they get a job, even if that job is not enough to provide for the family that it has affected. This leads to welfare recipients who are actually better off without looking for jobs. I saw a snapshot of this problem with my work at the API, as counties that were heavily poor and had high percentages of welfare recipients were often the districts that were miserably failing standardized tests, some with less than 1% passing.
No Test, No Check Ronald Reagan said, “We should measure welfare’s success by how many people leave, not by how many are added.” People should find a way not to rely on the government for assistance unless it is truly needed. Welfare is defined as a program designed to help those in financial need or the unemployed by distributing goods or money. Welfare is made for those who need assistance for a short amount of time and is not meant to be long term. It is a privilege for those who are not financially stable enough to support themselves or their families.
Drug abuse is up to ten percent in the U.S. That is twenty-three million people. Just imagine how many of those people could possibly be using welfare checks to support those addictions. The government is clueless to what the money they give out is spent on. Arizona, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Utah are seven states that require a drug test before allowing a person to receive welfare.
The United States welfare system was created to assist those in situations where they couldn’t work or were in bad financial situation. The aid offered can be received through multiple different federally funded programs. This has helped many of those kinds of people who couldn’t help themselves get out of financial crisis. However, the system has been abused by those who are too lazy to work. Plenty of people use welfare to gain an income while avoiding work or looking for it.
I believe that even though we are wasting our tax money for the drug test is better than helping someone who is on drugs. Last of all, if someone who isn’t able to provide anything to their family those are the people who really deserve the help. Welfare should only be available for those who can’t work not only but also those who trying to get a stable job. So people shouldn 't be take advantage of the welfare help because there some people who actually need the help but don’t even qualify just because they have a paying job. People who receive welfare benefits need to be more grateful on what you spend our tax money
In brief, the use of drugs has multiple adverse effects, and is highly associated with the status of homelessness among
Thirty-five percent of Americans recieve help from welfare every day, and if we drug test them that number would suddenly drop. Some individuals claim that drug testing would help individuals by putting them into treatment; however, there are several reasons why drug testing would not help recipients. While drug testing could recognize the individuals who need help, problems would be caused such as impacts on the person, the cost, and other impacts such as on children and poverty levels. I A. First, drug testing will cause problems with the money people are receiving. If the test is positive the recipient will have reduced income and they may not get any income at all (US Department of Health and Human Services 8).
I reviewed an analytical study that drew conclusions between substance abuse and homelessness. The study focused on if substance abuse occurred prior to or after homelessness. It also drew conclusions about the length of time someone remained homeless and what correlation substance abuse had to the timeframe of homelessness. For those who began abusing substances after becoming homeless, the study calculated how age may have played a factor in their susceptibility to drugs. The study completed used inferential statistics because it drew relationships between variables and tested the hypothesis of if substance abuse occurred prior to or after one became homeless.
Today in American society, countless people feel that they are entitled to everything no matter what. People who abuse the welfare system is a perfect example of how people believe that they deserve everything without having to actually do any work, causing laziness and selfishness. These individuals misuse welfare that helps countless people by taking the money for individuals who can’t support themselves or can’t find a job, and use it as a way to get free money without working. Another problem is that some of the youth demands respect of others without earning it and expect a successful job right out
I am here to persuade you that making welfare harder to obtain will not only positively affect those who apply, but our nation in a wide-scale socio-economic aspect. C. Preview of Main Points: I will explain where the government gets the money to fund programs, specifically TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Personal and socio-economic benefit will be explained. D. Benefit Instead of using money to fund drug use, money will be better spent in other areas within the states. The incentives to stop
