To quote the author and lifestyle philosopher Alexandra Stoddard, “When you leave a beautiful place, you carry it with you wherever you go.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement, and though I will try to pour my heart out as I write this essay and attempt to describe the true magnificence of Inis Mór, if I could use one word, it would simply have to be…beautiful. I very much appreciate the privilege of growing up in a household where travel is appreciated. Since a very young age, I’ve seen a lot. I’ve been to many places that I would consider beautiful, but the one place that has made the most significant impact on me was Inis Mór. I very well remember the day that I first arrived on the amazing island of Inis Mór, located on the west coast of Ireland. It was a sunny September Sunday, with several showers now and then. I decided to make way towards Kilronan, the town that we arrived in the previous day. I proceeded to a small locally-owned coffee shop. The sound of people speaking in Irish around me made me incredibly happy. I ordered what ended up being the best Americano I have ever had to this date. I sat down outside to drink it and eat a delicious pastry that I decided to treat myself with. Even though I wasn’t born in Ireland, I feel an incredible amount of respect towards the country and sitting around elderly ladies gossiping about their fellow bingo players in Irish is something I think about to this day. Not everyone may feel that experiencing the Irish language being spoken in a natural, everyday environment can be beautiful, but as cheesy as it may sound, I do.
